SroTs ON THE StN.—A large spot, whicn a very keen eye might, be able to distinguish with- out other assistance than a screen of smoked glass, is now visible nearthe eastern edge of the sun’sdisk. Any good spyglass will show it weil, but care should be taken to protect the eye ‘with a oo colored glass held firmly against the eyeptece. A smoked glass screen gives a pleasant view, but ts dangerous because he sooty deposit is apt to get rubbed off. The combination of a n glass with a red one {5 best, as it allows little heat to reach the eye, and shows the sun’s disk free from annoying discoloration. An astronomical telescope shows, in addition to the great spot, a scattered, double Cluster of small spots between it and the edge. au disk is marked, in the neighborhood of the spots, with the feed ridges called facule, which look like crinkled veins of light on the surface of the sun. The great spot is a very perfect specimen of its class, the vast, cavern- ous hole in the center, large enough probably for the earth to drop through, and with broken and ja: edges, looking almost black, with a alight tinge of purple. Near one end a vein of ight projects partly across the gulf. and beyond tha the black center breaks through the whit- ish border. The penumbra surrounding the 3 tion is broad and well marked, of a color and bordered with lighter streaks. vife and three children arrived in New York yesterday morning, on the steamer Colon, from the Isthmus of Panama. They took guarters in the Windsor Hotel, where M. de Lesseps received calls from a number of promi- nent persons. M. de Lesseps stated yesterday afternoon that there was no secret understanding between England, France and Germany in relation to the projected canal. Even the idea of such a thing was too absurd to think about. His mission here was to make known what had already had been done. He had nothing to hide in regard to the scheme; everything in relation to it was open. He did not ‘seek government or legislative ald, and ‘would not go before Congress. Referring to the Monroe doctrine, M. de Lesseps said nobody musi try to combat it, for in it lles the safety of the American people. He intended to make arrangements for a syndicate to sell bonds in the United States, as there are no popular sub- scriptions here. He intended to offer cver one- half of the subscriptions in America.
