Edison’s electrical gas-lamp does not seem to grow on the public confidence—I might rather say on the confidence of his private Irfends, several of whom I have talked to. One gentleman, who has taken the greatest Interest the inventor for several years past, told me almost one year ago that he Was afraid that Ed- ison had not Le hold of the right thiag nor in the right way, and added:—“I am a little afraid he ts a better inechanle that discoverer.” I saw the same man about two weeks ago, and again asked him whether Mr. Edison’s new light com- pany was a valid matter. “I think tt s a stock Speculation,” he said. ‘From what I have ob- served in my business of the attempts made to put out the stock and get rid of it, I think it isa strike for wealth. or for independence, at any Tate. The shares were held at $5,000 two mohths ago; I don’t believe you could ‘get $1,000 apiece for them now.” “You do not regard Edison asa Barnum?” cee a think Bet Delteves himself on the. eve ering ¢! gas-lighting, and his friends have undertaken to ‘discount ‘a perfect, discovery by parting with the present tolerable Tesults in the formof stock. Edison has no Kea of the value of money. He will spend $10,000 and go in debt besides to obtain immediately books and chemicals which he could get for $500 by wailing ten days. He is not to be blamed « that, use he values his discoveries mo than money. But he became so valuabio years ago, in the eyes of speculatorsand corporations, that his workshop is constantly surrounded by eee that class, who don’t iike to wait uatil he has attained some great result. They want to go off at a mere hint and sell stock in the probabilities. It has been said that whe: invented his duplex instrument, which he to Gould, Edison was tangled up by the Westera Union Company, and he sold 1 again to them, Jeading to long law suits.” I send you these Impressions of a_ man who 1s a good chemist, a good mechanic and a man of the world and of finance. He has no connection with gas-light companies and wishes well to Raison. though T think he has somewhat les confidence than formerly.—“Gath” in Cin. En- quires, GEN.
