In the first place, it is known that some of Tilden’s warmest friends on the committee voted for Cincinnati. Several days Por to the meeting of the committee ‘there was a disposition manifested by some of ‘Tilden’s friends to support St. Louis, in his in- terest, and his name was even mentioned as favoring that clty; but it was apparent last Saturday that if such a programme had been seriously considered, it had been determined not to carry it out. The Cincinnati delegation set thermselves earnestly to work to combat the idea that Tilden would fare better in St. Louis than in their city, and they succeeded. They pledged themselves that the greatest fairness should be shown all candi- dates, and pointed tothe fact that Tilden has supporters enough in Obio to take care of his interests. They urged that he would drive these supporters from him by contributing, in any manner, towards the defeat of Cincinnati. ‘The very fact that St. Louis received but four Votes 1s, of itself, sufficient to demonstrate that the combined Tilden influence did not support the claim of that city. In considering the action of the national committee in connection with ‘Tilden’s candidacy the formation of that com- mittee must be remembered. It was organized immediately after the nomination of the ticket at St. Louis, and when Tiiden’s friends Were in entire control of all the ma- chinery of the convention. It devolved upon this. committee to direct the campaign, and very naturally it was composed of men known to be faithful to the candidate; men who Would consult and follow his wishes. The events that followed the nomination may have driven some of the members from Tilden’s cause, but they have not reduced his followers to the in- fignificant number that votd for St. Louis. Speaker Randall, who is recognized as one of the chiefs of the Tilden democracy, advised the selection of Cincinnati, so the delegation from that city asserted, and the member from Ken- tucky, a staunch Tilden man, was for Cincin- nat! from the first. Last Saturdsy members of the committee who support Mr. Bayard for the preside:itial nomination waited upon the Sena- tor and asked where he would like to have the convention held. He replied that it was a mat- ter which he felt he had no right to interfere in; that he had no chotce of location whatever. He ‘Wanted the committee to consult the best in- terests of the party, but for himself he was not acandidate for the presidential nomination, and earnestly desired that his friends weuld not Beek to direct the convention in his interest. Senator Thurman, as a citizen of Ohio, favored Cincinnati, but his friends kept his presidential aspirations out of the contest. The Tilden men then announced that their candidate had no preference whatever in regard to the choice of a.city for the holding of the conventiop, and so the several presidential candidates kept their hands out of the affair. The argument in behalf of Cincinnati that evidently had the most Weight, was that the democracy might be en- abled to carry Ohio. Chicago, it was urged, was situated in a hopelessly republican state, While St. Louis is in a state that needs no encouragement to make it democratic. The shrewd Cincinnatians pressed this argument, saying that the holding of the Convention in Cincinnati would arouse enthusiasm in the Gemocracy there, and that whenever the party Carried that city it carried the state also. The expressions of members of the committee, after the selection, were all to the effect that it had not been made with the view of aiding or de- feating the aspirations of any candidate for the Romination. Cincinnati has never shown any partiality for Senator Thurman, and his treat- Ment In the past by the democrats of that city ‘warrants the belief that the selection was not made in his interest. Tilden’s “fine Italian hand,” in all probability, was secretly at work in the committee, but not in favor of St. Louis, else that city would have received a larger vote. ‘Therefore there is no good ground for saying he was defeated in the choice of a place for the meeting of the convention. After the action had been taken the knowr supporters of Tilden ‘were apparently well pleased, and when con- Bulted about the candidacy of that gentleman ‘they intimated that he was still in the field. —___§_~++-______ As near a champion as he Is likely to get Admiral Lee seems to have found in the New York Times. That paper espouses in this dam- aging way his course in refusing to sell to the Corcoran Gallery, at any price, certain ground he owns, and which happens to be essential to the extension of that institution and the estab- Ushment of an Academy of Fine Arts and School Of Design: “As it does not appear that Admiral Lee re- fuses the land from any dog-in-the-manger spirit, how comes it that it Is regarded as an Suirage on his part? Is a man to be hectored Into Ube sale of real estate at a price below what he considers ifs value?” ‘This does not state the facts correctly. Admi- Tal Lee {s not asked to sell the ground in ques- tion “at a price below what he considers its value.” He has been requested to sell it at What he considers its value; nothing less. Or, if he does not want to fix the price himself, he is asked either to name three of his own friends or three professional real estate dealers to name Its value, and this price, with tirenty per cent added, will be paid, in cash. Neither of these things will he do. He simply refuses, and places himself in the attitude of preventing the con- Summation of a purpose which would be of in- ealculable value not only to the city where he resides, but to the whole country, as well. ‘The ground needed by the Gallery was not in- hherited by Admiral Lee. Neither does it con- tain a homestead or other improyement, which might endear it by associations of any kind to its owner. It is not pretended that he proposes to improve {t or to make any other kindred use Of it for the comfort or convenience of himself Or his family, It was bought, as he himself has ‘Stated, ‘on speculation,” and when an oppor- tunity occurs to carry out his purpose, and at the same time confer a benefit upon the pub- lic, he sullenly and stubbornly sits down in the ‘Way, and refuses to do anything. If this course Goes not indicate a “ dog-in-the-manger-spirit” perhaps our cotemporary will explain to its Yeaders what that spirit 1s, and how it mani- ests itself. ++ —_____ ‘The board of health of San Francisco are not Wolng to be content with the abatement of the nuisance known as Chinatown. They insist that the Chinese residents shall not be permit- ‘ted to herd together in hovels in any part of the ity, but that they shall be required to live Gleanly and in healthy, well-ventilated quarters. if this plan ts enforced 1t will add so much to ‘the expense of a Chinaman’s living that he will, Probably, be compelled to exact wages in pro- portion with other workingmen. ‘The greenbackers in & Congress have been on the watch for weeks, but they are notable to @atch the Speaker's eye. Weaver is a tall man, ut the Speaker is always able to look right over him at the member behind.
