THE FAMINE now so keenly felt in Ireland will in all probability have the effect to in- crease the Irish immigration to this country. ‘The suffering of thirty years ago had such re- sult and the imunigration statistics of that time are of interest. The number of immigrants in 1847, when the famine had fairly shown the ne- cessity that som? of the population should seek new homes, was more than twice as great as in the previous year, amounting to 105,500. In 1848 it reached 112,900, and grew until it ‘reached 221,943 In 1851, when It declined pretty grad- ually until in 1855 tt got down to 56,300, which has been about the average of the years since. We cannot ee to feel the effect of any in- creesed immigration certainly before next year, and when it does begin It 13 likely to con- Unue for several years. In the former instance the tide was kept up for nearly ten years. ‘THE COMMITTEE ON THE SICK reported that they had been summoned to the bedside of Na- poleon Bonaparte Dawson, of Illinois street, who was disabled with a lame back and ex- [soe to be taken care of by the relief fund. ‘he committee has ascertained that he sprained his back by trying to make a running jump of ten feet, and further they would not report. “If Brudder Napoleon Bonaparte Dawson sprained his back by trying to jump ten feet he kin now cure it by tryin’ to jump twenty” said the ident in reply, ‘De relief fund of dis club doan’ kiver cases whar a member makes a fool of his- self.
