A special dispatch to the Baltimore Gazette. from Annapolis, February 19, says: A bili authorizing the construction of an extepsion of the Chesapeake and Ohio canal was Introduced in the state senate to-day by Mr. Gorman, who also obtained leave to Introduce a bill authoriz- ing the construction of a ship canal connecting the Chesapeake bay with the Atlantic ocean by what is known as the Choptank route. The preamble of the bill to incorporate the Chi peake Bay & Potomac River Tidewater Cai company as introduced by Mr. Gorman se! forth that the state in giving assent to the charter of the Chesapeake & Ohio Canal com- pany reserved the right to charter and con- struct a lateral canal to connect with the Chesapeake & Ohio at a point tn the District of Columoia, wich reservation Congress assented to; ’ that it 1s now more than ever necessary to secure to the city of Baltimore a portion of the large and increasing travel of the Chesapeake and Ohio canal, which can only be done by the construction of a broad canal; that to secure this trade to the state and city it 1s only neces- sary to construct twenty-six miles of canal from the Beaver Dam creek, on the east branch of the Potomac, across to the western branch of the Patuxent, down it and through the main river to Lyons’ creek, up it and across to Her- ring bay, on the Chesapeake; that it ts the in- tention of the act to construct such a canal and to confer upon the company all the rights, &c. now held by the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal Company. ‘The incorporators named in the act are A.
