Pending further action the House adjourned at 4:20 p.m. A TERRIBLE TRAGEDY IN PENNSYLVANIA.—Th Lancaster, Pa., New Era has details of a terrible tragedy discovered at Bainbridge, that county, Saturday. Charles Lane murdered his wife and two children, and then took his own life by poison. When discovered the victims were lying on their beds, and their third chiid, a boy taree Years old, was found with his feet badly frozen. Its recovery is doubtful. The verdict of the coroner’s jury was that Lane murdered his wife and then ered poison to himself and children. They had not nm seen since Thurs- day until the tragedy was discovered. Lane, who was twenty-four years of age, moved from Carroll county, Maryland, to Bainbridge, last Year, and the family Were ‘in destitute circum- tances. The children killed were a girl six years and an infant three months old. From appearances the desperate father, who was a man of or frame, Six feet three inches in b@ight, besides, poisoning the girl, selzed her by athe head and body and twisted her frame until her neck was broken. On the bed lay Mrs. Lane in her night dress, with the side ot her head crushed in, and her infant, three months old, lying in her arms, both dead, the babe’s right hand holding in 1s stiffened clutch a lot of its mother’s hair. The house 1s a dilapidated old concern, and ad- mitted the cold wind through many crevices in the walls, and in tne corner where the little boy was found it had a fair sweep on his body. ‘The father was no doubt driven to the dead by insane despair. LETTER OF SECRETARY SHERMAN TO COLORED VirGINIANs.—Secretary Sherman, in reply toa letter from the colored members of the Virginia legislature, who desire to extend to him their sincere congratulations over the almost univer- sal sentiment among the republicans of Virginia in favor of his nomination as President of the United States, says:—“The situation in which you are now placed, not only as voters and equal citizens, but as a partof the law-makers of the ancient Commonwealth of Virginia, where your race was for a long time held in slavery, 1s one of peculiar interest and importance. You are now invested with all the Fights held by any other citizens ol Virginia, and you should and no doubt do feel the ett responsibilities of your position. The wife of Rev, Chas. E. Walker, of Somerse! bi and his a Geo. F. Finkham, re arrested in New York, Sunday. as they Depped froma Fall River boat, by a detective, charged by Mr. Walker with élopement. No one ap} r4 st_ them, the justice dis- charged both. Mrs. Walker declared that the charge of eloping with the stableman was false, and gave a harrowing account of the Ill-treat- ment she had received from her husgand, with the Sige iow of intimacy with another woman he had brought into the house. She id she accidentally met Finkham at Fall River, and, as she had no money, he paid her passage, and that they had sat up all night in her room.
