REPORTED MARRIAGE OF A FARMER TO WIS STEP- DAUGHTER. Special correspondence of the Baltimore @. zelle from Princess Anne, Somerset county, F Tuary 10, says: An astounding and unnatural marriage, which ts unparalleled in the history of the state, is sald to have been celebrated near Dames Quarter, in this county, on day last, and has caused considerable ment among the residents of this vicinity ing the past’ three or four days rumo been circulated to the effect that Sidne' Shores, a well-to-do farmer, residing near Dames Quar- is 12-year-old ter, had married Gussie Shores, his stepdaughter, and that they were liv gether as man and wife. From invest made yesterday the marriage ts believed to h: taken place. It appears that on the 12th of last September Shores’ wife, who was about 35 years of age, died, leaving in his charge her child Gussie, 12 years old, a daughter by her first husband, Capt. Samuel Shores, an uncle of Syd- ney. AS will beseen, the child was not only Sydney's stepdaughter but was also his first cousin. After Mrs. Shores died Sydney continued to reside in his old home with his young daughter until January, when he sent her to school on Deal’s Island. On Tuesday last he took her away from the school and brought her to Prin- cess Anne, where he is believed to have obtained a marriage license in the name of Sydney and Augusta Shores. He then visited several cler- gymen vainly endeavoring to induce them to marry him to the child, but failed to have the necessary ceremony performed. He afterward went to a local preacher, who, {t 13 said, per- formed the ceremony, after which the couple returned home. Since the facts were made pub- lic several ladies have visited the house and en- deavored to induce Mr. Shores to allow the child to be taken away, but at the last accounts had met with no success. As far as can be ascer- tained Mr. Shores’ treatment of the girl has been uniformly kind and considerate, and she hus always appeared happy and contented. It 1 that the child was induced to give her Consent tothe union without belng aware of the nature of the obligation she was assuming, owing to her extreme youthfulness. | She is represented as bein a cht and attractive, and pessessed of a kin generous disposition t! at hes won her many, friends. Itis probable ‘har an effort will be made to have them separ- ated, although the exact ground upon watch the application will be made has not transpired. D INTERROGATED.—In the House england, Tuesday, Earl Granville rit was true that the government relleved Persta from her engagements rela- lve to Herst. Lord Beaconsileld replies “There is no foundation for the statement. Steps for the settlement of affairs in Afghani: tan already in many instances have been taken with success. During their progress many com- munications were interchanged with Persia con- cerning the northeastern frontier, but’ nothing has been concluded. It would be most inconve- nient and injurious ‘to present the papers on the subject now.” enn ALLEGED LorreRY SWINDLE.—John Patty, e Patty and George Blythe, proprietors of the ‘atty Hotel, at Fond du Lac, Wis., have been arrested for being party to a lottery scheme to dispose of the hotel at $10,000, with extra inducements amounting to $79,000. They had sold $47,000 worth of tickets, violating the Postal laws and also fraudulently overestima- ting the property. SUCCESSFUL Bank RopseRY.—The vault of the Westport (Conn.) National Bank was broken into at 3 a. m. yesterday, and robbed of between $3,000 and $4,000. The village watchman was knocked down and gagged an hour before by twomen. Three others then appeared, carried him into the bank and locked him up in a closet. The vault was then exploded with gunpowder, and the concussion was so violent that the plate-glass front of the bank was smashed and the nelenbors were aroused, An alarm of fire was , but the burglars got off with their 36,000,000 JAPANESE GOING TO ScHOOL.—The latest report of the minister of education in Japan shows a heavy increase in pubilc instruc- tion throughout the empire. The school atten- danee is now 36,000,000, the males, however, pre- ponderating. The universal interest in educa- Won is roved by the fact that in five years pri- vate voluntary donations to the schools and oe amount to nearly $9,000,000 and up- of 700,000 acres of Tand The Japanese Fealdents in ‘Corea Row number 1,500, A hos- ital and school have been established at the isan settlement. INDIAN MURDERERS PUNISHED.—A special dis- patch from Fort Keogh, dated February 8, says: Sergeant Glover, of company B, 2d cavalry, of this post, with ten men and ten Indian scouts, started out on the 4th instant, to capture a arty of Sioux Indians, supposed to belong to ‘itting Bull's band, who killed one man and wounded another some days ago on Mizpah creek. They tound them near the head of Pump- kin creek, when a skirmish ensued, which re- sulted in the death of two Sioux and one soldier xilled and ‘one wounded.
