nN Ft } THE EVENING STAR. WASHINGTON, WHUESDAY....... February 12, 1850. BOSRY 8. NOYES....Editor. ————— The Evening Star has a regular, perma- ment, bona fide daily circulation more than double that of any other daily paper published in Washington, and equal tothat of all the other daily papers Irere added to- getner. = Subseriptions will be recelved and duly ac- counted to the New York Herald Irish Famine Fund at the office of THe Star. A list, with mame of contributor, former residence tn Ire- land, present residence, and amount of subscrip- tion, is now open. The Eight Page Star On Saturday will be an interesting number. Advertisers and news dealers will please send in their opders'as usual, at the earliest practicable ent. The orders of news dealers alone on Saturday last exceeded the daily circulation of any other Washington paper, and to this may be added the increased circulation of Toe STaR by carriers throughout the District. The ad- vertisements for February—the dullest month of the year—reach 5S6 for the ten publication days, being more for that time than all the other papers in the city added together print in a month. ——___-<+e--_____ Evidences that the ‘code duello” is growing unpopular in the south are quite frequently Seen these days. Only a few days ago C. W Button, editor of the Lynchburg Viryinian, was challenged by editor Elam, of the Richmond Whig, because of something the former pub- lished which reflected upon the latter. Mr. Button replied, in writing, that he was a “Christian man” and abhorred the code, but that while he would neither retract the offensive language nor fight a duel, he could be found at all proper hours in his office, where he was Teady to attend to business. He also notified Elam that if attacked he could defend himself. Mr. Elam and his “friend” took the next train for Richmond, and so far the southern journals have commended Mr. Button for his course. A few years ago he would have been condemned by the general voice of that section. The recent “duel” between New Orleans editors, in which two shots were fired but nobody was hurt, has done a great deal towards bringing the code into ridicule and disreput: —___~--_____. A curious incident occurred recently on one of the bridges crossing the river Limmat, which flows through the city of Zurich, illustrating the sagacity of the gulls or terns frequenting ‘some of the Swiss lakes. A gentleman who for amusement was in the habit of feeding these birds with refuse of meat (which they are very fond of) had his hat knocked off into the rapid current below, by one of the more eager gulls hovering around. The lookers-on laughed at the mishap, anda boat was about to put out into the stream to secure the trophy, when, to the surprise of every one, a gull was noticed to dart down upon the floating hat, and after sev- eral ineffectual attempts, succeeded at last in rising with it in its beak, and flying towards the bridge, to the great astonishment of every one, when over" its center dropped the well- Soaked hat, where the bystanders at ence se- cured it for the owner. Those who believe that animals have the reasoning faculty will doubt- Jess add this to their list of proofs. —-o+e ____ The bill, reported yesterday from the Senate judiciary committe, for the suppression of polyg- amy in the United States, will, it 1s believed, be taken up at an early day. This will bring the Whole question before the present session of Congress and It will, very probably, be debated at some length in both houses. The Dill re- ported yesterday imposes penalties for the future practice of polygamy, or bigamy, as it is defined in the statutes, and disqualifies any man believing in the practice from jury service. The children born of polygamous marriages prior to November 1st, 1879, are legitimate, but subse- quent births of that kind will not be recognized by the law. Power to grant pardons for offenses of this character fs conferred upon the Presi- dent. While the practice of polygamy is gener- ally condemned by the sentiment of the Amgri- can people there is a manifest desire that our law makers and law officers shall temper justice with mercy, discretion and consideration in dealing with the people of Utah. The action of the Chicago hotel keepers in com- Dining to raise the prices of accomraodation during the session of the republican national convention is receiving universal condemnation. ‘The plan devised by the hotel proprietors 1s to estimate the number of cots that a room will contain, and charge the price of five dollars for RAND RAFFLE, SATURDAY, February l4th, GRee Tireach loading Gun. ‘1 Revolver, ,Sil- yer Watch and Gold Ri highest and two lowest. Any person can procure an entire Toom by paying for its area at the rate of five dollars per cot. For instance, if the room would hold five cots, the price per day would be $25. ‘The delegation who urged the selection of Chi- cago promised, it is said, that the hotels should charge only their usual rates to delegates and Visitors to the convention. If it were practica- ble, it would bea good plan for the national committee to reassemble, revoke its action se- lecting Chicago, and choose some other place for the convention. The democratic committee, at its meeting on the 23d, can avoid all trouble of this nature by naming Washington as the place for holding the national convention of that party. No doubt the hotel Keepers of this city would file with the committee written obliga- tions to maintain their usual rates of charge during the sitting of the convention. —__<--_____ The Senate in executive session yesterday began the work of rejecting unacceptable nomi- nations for census supervisors. The entire list of Ohio nominations was rejected by a majority Of 15 or 16, several republicans voting with the democrats against confirmation. It was alleged, but not in the session of the Senate, of course, that the Ohio list had been selected in the in- terest of Secretary Sherman’s candidacy for the Presidential nomination, and that, if they were confirmed, they would devote much of their ‘Ume and all their influence to furthering that candidate. The democratic Senators objected to the list because it was composed entirely of Tepublic: There are other nominations for Supervisors which are marked for rejection, and there is every prospect of an exciting contest before the entire list shall have been filled. —__—<$<$_<or___ Washington Territory has elected Blaine dele, “tes to the Chicago convention, but unfor- tunat'v tor Mr. Blaine, territorial delegates cannot rote.—Exrchange. This is . mistake. Territorial delegates and delegates :om the District of Columbia have Votes in the republican national convention, hence the sh irpness of the contest to secure the delegation for this District last week. In the democratic national convention territorial delegates and celegates from the District of Columbia have no votes, and occupy merely an honorary position. —-<+e-—__.
