Pouce Force. — Yesterday, in the Criminal Court, Judge Hagner made some remarks to the grand jury as to the police force and the neces- sity of an increase. He said that the city wh and the population increased largely since the Metropolitan Police force had been of ganized and consequentiy a greater numbe of men is requisite. [Cheers.} A motion was carried to appotnt an assistant secretary, and Mr. H. D. Bartley was appointed. ‘The call was Proceeded with. When the 19th led Mr. Quirk failed to answer, and Mr. P. A. Jullien claimed the right to vote as the alternate who received the highest nut ber of votes. Mr. Gleason claimed that Mr. Quirk being absent, they desired that Mr. Lav- allette cast the vote, It was claimed that the ‘20th district was entitled to a vote, as the con- test there had been withdrawn. He became acquainted with him in the year 1863. [A _volce—“Seventeen years to go over yet.”} and he bad found him, in all his parsutts of life, a man lending his hand to the elevation of his race, ete., ect., etc. He was going on in the same strain at mach length, when Mr. Swaggart remarked that the sun was going down, and he arose to call Mr. Laws to order. Mr. Laws Teplied that he was a gentleman, and intended to act as one. It had been srid that they had but three representative colored men here, and he wanted to show that they had men to take the place of the elder ones. He therefore had a young man to nomi- nate—Chas. B. Purvis. [Applause.] Mr. Chase, in seconding the nomination of Dr. Purvis, said that Purvis was not controlled by the policy inaugurated by President Hayes, which remark elicited the applause of the con- vention. Mr. W. H. Grimshaw rose to put in nomina- tion a peer of any one, and his name was John F. Cook, (Applause.} Mr. W. iiunter nominated F. Douglas, jr., and Le Moseley, of the 22d district, nominated Sayles J. Bowen. [Applause.} Mr. Barton nominated Robert G. Ingersoll. Up to the time our report closed no motion had been made to reconsider the vote whereby the report, of the majority of the committee on credentials was adopted.
