GRANT VS. BLAINE. A resolution was then Introduced by Mr. Herr “that the delegates elected to the republican national convention from this state are hereoy instructed to support for the presidential nomination General U. S. Grant, and to vote as a unit on all questions that may evn before the convention.” Mr. Stone, of Crav ford, offered an amendmer nat’ while we pledge ourselves to support the repubitean parts we see no good reason for abandoning the posi- tion taken_by the party In our own and other Flates in 1876, of opposition to a third presiden- tial term, and we hereby endorse and reaflirm the resolutions passed by our state convention held in this elty fn 1876 upon this question.” Senator Herr argued in favor of hts resolution, and General Albright replied. He dtd not be: Heve in instructing the delegates to Chicago tor any man. The resolution was further opposed by Gen, Koontz, Darlington of Chester, Harvey of Clinton, and’ Wolfe of Union, while More land of Allegheny, and Bingham of Philadel- phia, favored it, The speeches of the auti-Grant people were all from a Blaine point of view, and no other names beside Grant and Blaine were mentioned at all, except in the remarks of Gen. Albright. Mr. Stone, of Crawford, after anguing strongly and steadfastly in favor of his amend- Ment to the resolution of instruction, flaally withdrew it, and Mr. Strong, of Tioga, offered. another one, to wit, to strike out the name of U.S. Grant and insert that of James G. Blaine. Ona vote by yeas and nays Strong’s amendment was lost—95 to 154—several of the Blaine people youlng against It on the ground that {t was not roper to instruct the delegation for any one. The question then recurred on the original res lution, or rather that structed the Chicago delegates to v Grant. Again the yeas and nays were ord and showed a vote of 133 in favor of and against that portion of the rosolutte second portion of the resolution, ins ructing the Co Saree to vote as a unit, was then adopted by a viva voce vote, NOMINATIONS. Nominations for auditor- general being in omen the names of Hon. John A. Lemon and J. Passmore were placed before the convention. ‘The yeas and nays were taken on the nomination for auditor-general, and Lemon was deciared the choice of the con- vention by 158 to 93. His nomination was then made unanimous. The committee of nine to name delegates to the Chicago convention and to name presidential electors were then re- ported, which was adopted. The following are the delegates at large: Mathew S. Quay, James McManes, Linn pee Christopher L. Magee; alternates, Gen. D. 8. Eliott, J. Hay Brown: Henry Buck, Sam’l M. Jackson: electors at large, Edmund A. Benson and Henry W. Oliver. Hon. Henry Greene was unanimously nominated for judge of the supreme court. THE PLATFORM. A man named Berinfield and his wite ners been living with Mrs. Bermileld’s mother id step- father, Samuel J. Holmes. The latter had be- come enraged on account of his wife conveying aportion of her property over to Mrs. Berm- fee and yesterday morning he attacked Berm- field’ with a hickory club, knocking him sense- less, and then went to the’ bed where Mrs. Bera- field was sleeping and dragged her out by the hair and beat her until she was unconscious. Bermfield recovered and ran out crying for help. Holmes followed, and they had a fierce strug- ge in which Mrs. Bermfleld assisted her hus- md. They started to escape from Holmes across the frozen fleid in their night clothes to tuelr neighbor's, but were overtaken by him and another struggle ensued, in which Berm- fleid defended himself and wife with fence rails. Holmes at last started back to kill his wite, but the neighbors arrived in time to save her, and * he was arrested. Mr. and Mrs. Bermticld are not likely to recovel AMERICAN PoTTERyY.—It ts estimated that the United States have in operation $00 potteries, employing 7,000 hands, with a working capit of $6,500,000, and placing upon the markets goods to thé value of $7,000,000 annually. ‘The imports during 1870 were $4,358,771, but this amount was increased in 1373 to $6,015,925, since when the domestic manufacture has steadily gran infavor. ‘Thus we find that the imports luring the past year were some $30,009 less than those of 1870. Dorsey, of Beauvotr, is her entire en- as begun in earnest, and during the eat days of next month the argument in the United States circuit court of Louisiana will be heard and a decision asked. Some weeks ago certain relatives of Mrs. Dorsey filed a complaint, com- plaining that the vestatrix did not possess tes- lamentary capacity, and that she was unduly influenced, coupled with an application to set the will aside as being unjusy to the next of kin and also as being opposed to pubile policy. To this Messrs. Breaux, Fenner and Hull, an emi- nent New Orleans law firm, as attorneys for Mr. Davis, have filed a demurrer, because the ail Uons tn the complalut “are inconsistent with the claim that the testatrix was of unsound mind or was unduly influenced tn making her Will, and therefore the comp'aint does not state facts sufficient to constitute a cause for action.” ‘The last part of the demurrer 13 interpreted by the counsel of the bext of kin to refer to that part of the complaint which sets forth that {t Was opposed to public policy and good to admit the will to probate. In will be reniembered that Mrs. Dorsey laid particular stress upon the fact that in her judgment Mr. Davis has recelved no reward for fighting for his country—meantng the confederate states—and that.all his patriotio services going without recognition, she desired him to own and enjoy her rich estate. Counsel for complainants will take (he ground that Mrs. Dorsey’s bequest Is a reward for treason and a premium upon, and hence opposed to the spirit and text of the constitution. ‘The amount in- Volved Is about $25,000. all the ofl i the diffe ls in the In- ent agencies LaDIEs aS Stock SpEcULATORS.—A private stock exchange, exclusively for the use of ladies, has been opeved in west 24th street. The funeral was postponed till Sun- day, the body was placed in a warm room and a physician calied.
