The laughing song of Mr. Tucker, and the very funny school-boy recitation of “Casa Blanca,” by Mr. White, seemed to please the en- tre avdience of insiders and outsiders best. At the conclusion of the entertainment the patients filed out to their wards, and the few visitors,who had the good’fortune to be present, were invited by Dr. Chase, the first assistant physician, and his estimable wife, to their apart- ments, where the party was joined by Drs. Witmer and Stack, of the institution, and re- freshments were served. After ashort period of social converse the visitors departed, well pleased. Miss Mary Harris was one of the inter- ested audience present. She feels aggrieved, it is sald, at the recently published statements that she had been the victim of her lover, Bur- roughs, whom she shot in the Treasury depart- ment. His desertion of her after a solemn Promise of marriage, was the only wrong she avenged. All the faithful who have twenty-first year are, unless legitimately dispensed, bound to observe the fast of Lent. % They’ are to make only one al y, excepting Sundays. 3, The meal allowed on fast days is not to be taken till about noon. 4. Flesh meat and fish are not to be used at the same meal sore Lent. 5. A all retreshment, commonly called collation, owed in the evening, not to exceed the fourth part of a meal. 6. It is permitted to bread, butter, cheese, eggs, milk, all kinds of fruits, salads, vegetables and fish’ at the ¢ tion. 7. General usage has made it lawiully to take in the morning some warm liquid, as tea, coffee or Unin chocolate made with water, and a mouthful of bread. Necessity and custom haye authorized the use of hog’s lard, instead of butter, in_ preparing permitted food. 9. The following persons are exempted from the oblt- lons of fasting: Persons under twenty-one Feats of age, the sick, nursing women, those who are obliged to do hard labor, all who, though weakness, cannot fast without great prejudice to their health. 10. By dispensation the use of flesh meat will be allowed at all and once a day on Mondays, and Saturdays, with the ‘hursday and the second and of Lent. 11.
