The feud in the democratic party of South Carolina seems to be increasing in bitterness. Some time ago Gen. Mort Gary, leader of the extreme bourbon element of the party, charged, in an interview, that Gov. Hampton sacrificed the Tilden electors in 1876 to gain republican support for the state ticket of which he (Hamp- ton) was the head. Senator Hampton pro- nounced this “utterly and absolutely false,” and recently Gary reiterated his charge, with additional details. Now Col. Haskell, son-in-law of Senator Hampton, takes up the fight in behalf of the latter, and in a letter pub- shed in the South Carolina papers, not only pronounces Gary’s allegations false, but denounces him as a participator in a number of corrupt transactions. Col Haskell’s charges against Gery are set forth with specifications, and the effect will no doubt be w bring the quarrel to an issue soon. Gary wants the dem- ocratic nomination for governor, but he isan extreme bourbon, even fanatic, in politics, and issupported by only men of that class. The conservative and moderate democrats, led by Hampton, have opposed all of Gary’s ambitious schemes, because they believe that he would by his violence as a partisan, damage his state and party, if he were entrusted with position by it. Gary regards Hamptonas te min, who, above all others, has marred his political Schemes, and therefore he directs his resent- ment chiefly against the Senator. Leading democrats of the state are fearful that the feud may result in a division in the democratic party, and powerful influences are at work to stop the discussion. ‘The bill declaring all “public roads and high- Ways” postal routes has passed the House and the indications are that it will become a law. ‘The effect of the law would be to invest the Post Office department with entire discretion in the establishment of new postal routes. Now it requires an act of Congress to establish the most unimportant postal route in the country, and the result is that special legislation of this char- acter is continually before Congress. Bills es- vablishing postal routes are always passed, afer going through the usual routine of Con- s7essional measures, and the objections that ive been urged against the pending bill ap- pear trivial Under the present system, when eltizens of a locality desire a new route, they vaust forward their petition to Congress; then a Dill is introduced, and after going to the proper committees it is passed, and the department is directed to put on the service petitioned for. ‘The House bill proposes to refer the entire business to the Post Office department ‘in a jump, with full authority to grant petitions for new routes when the service {fs considered necessary. This will relieve Congress of the labor Of passing bills for each special case and will give control of the business to the depart- ment of the government that is competent to determine when and where additional mail ser- vice fs needed. Mr. Thomas B. Keogh, of North Carolina, Must be a very much astonished man. He fs a Member of the republican national committee and secretary of the same. The other day he expressed the opinion to a New York inter- viewer that Sherman had no strength down in North Carolina, and that the feeling was for Grant there. The republican committee of that State yesterday declared in favor of Sherman. and elected a Sherman man chairman in place of Mr. Keogh, who resigned in disgust when he found how things were working in the commit- tee. Secretary Sherman is charged with all Sorts of reprehensible strategy to secure delega- tons from southern states; but this may be only the clamor of defeated politicians. At any rate the fact remains that he has captured a State set down as certain to vote for Grant at Chicago. According to the New York correspondent of the Philadelphia Lager, the tenor of private Jetters and despatches received from influential delegates to the Harrisburg republican conven- Uon, indicate that the Cameron influence will preponderate, and in that case that Pennsylva- nia ts sure for General Grant. If thise be so, he says it would be idle to deny that the New York convention will be, if only from sympathy, sus- ceptible to the same impressions. It 1s stated in the same connection that ex-Collector Arthur of New York, who will probably be chairman of the republican convention of that state, repudi- ates the popular Idea that he is working for Sen- ator Conkling, and makes no secret of his con- viction that the New York delegation will be a unit for Grant. Senator Lamar’s efforts to elect General Wal- thall U. Senator from Mississippi, have brought down upon him the tndignation of the defeated candidates for that position. Barks- dale, editor of the Jackson Clarion, who at one time came within a few votes of election by the caucus, denounces Mr. Lamar editorially for having “abandoned his official duties at Wash- ington for weeks to manipulate public senti- ment and to control the action of the legisla- ture in the selection of his colleagu: eS SS The total consumption of sugar in the United States last year amounted to against 773,472 tons in 1878, an i percent. The average prices lower than any time siace 16), and while the prospects are favorable for a fair crop this year the estimate 1s that it will fall below that of last year, and, as the consumptive demand will increase, prices will rule higher. We get nearly three-fourths of our sugar from Cuba, and the present estimate fs that the crop for exporta- tion this year from that island will be only about 575,000 tons, against 630,000 tons shipped last year. ——_—_+ee-_____ Citizens complain, and not without reason, that contractors repairing the concrete streets Occasion nuisances on the sidewalks by the chippings from the roadways.
