WHAT THEY PROPOSE TO DO IN THE PRESIDENTIAL CAMPAIGN. ‘The Maine fuston legislature, after a prolongad secret session yesterday afternoon, adjourned to meet on the first Wednesday in August next. Many of the members will go home, not to Te- turn to Augusta before that day. Others will xo back to the people of their districts, to abide by thetr decision as to Joining or remaining out of the state house legislature, and others’ will take their seats among their n breth- ren. Hill, of Corinth, and Milliken, of Burnham, (fusionists) appeared and took theit seats. Some fusionists claim that it is their hon- est purpose and intention to meet on the day named, and that they will enter upon heavy campaign work for the next election, endeavor to have two returns of congressional votes, one to be sent to them and another to the legisla- ture as recognized by the courts, and that they will make up a case to Congress concerning the electoral vote. The republicans, and quite a number of fusionists, say that such an adjourn- ment was the easies ible way of letting down the counted-in members, who have given their associates a good deal of trouble; that the fusion legislature Will never again meet, as will be shown to-day by ts members taking Seats in the regular legislature. The legislature will declare vacant all seats that are not now filled, and new elections will be ordered. Major Smith will leave for home on the early morning train to attend to his lumbering business. He recom- mends the quiet submission of all good citizens to the will of the court. Fusion Secretary of State Sawyer has promised to revurn the valua- tion books to the office of the secretary of state, and it is thought that he will not clatm to be secretary any longer. The trouble, as far as can be ascertained, bas its origin In the fact that John W. These works have heretofore been almost entirely run by white operatives, who live in and own thelr little homes in the neighborhood of the fur- aces, and who have no other means of support than their daily labor, while the segroes who are replacing them are imported from other counties where the negro element prevails to a greater extent than in Shenandoah, which county has but a very small colored population.
