THE EVENING STAR. WASHINGTON, WEDNESDAY January <S, 1880. CROSBY 8. NOYES....Editor. = =—— Average Daily Circulation over 17,.750— being a much larger bona fide, regular and PP apemroricay circulation than that of Gl the other daily papers in the city added together. abering past loving citizens, rem: "8, haveasa class given the cold shoul. der to the present movement for the restoration Of undiluted suffrage. The suffragists have en- deavored to dispel this public aversion to their project by arguing that the rowdy, turbulent element has been eliminated from our popula- tion since the days when the name of suffrage Was made a by-word by the cheating, packing, and stuffing of the gangs who dominated at the nominating meetings and elec- tions. It is claimed that this rufianly crowd has been dispersed, never to raily again in Washington, and that the tax-payers and quiet citizens would now have the upper hand @ the ballot-box, and that everything would be quiet, honest, and lovely at the nominating Meetings, registrations, and elections. The pro- ceedings at the various district and committee meetings of the suffragists demonstrate the falsity of this claim. The same old disorderly gangs show themselves, with scarce a diminu- tion in numbers, except here and there one is missed who is serving out a term in the penitentiary. The same machinery of packing meetin; “counting out,” &e., 15 I full working operation. The evidence of this is not from prejudiced sources. Taey supply it themselves in the most conclu- sive terins, in their mutual charges of cheating and foul play. It ts quite evident that were suffrage restored these same gangs would again dominate in our affairs, and the better class of citizens would again be swamped by the “sturdy manhood” of Murder Bay and Hell's Bottom. The backers of Secretary Sherman for the Presidency do not propose to bi ‘ed in the foner citadel of their own stronghold,—not if they know themselves. The recent organiz: tion of a Blaine Club in Columbus, O., has had the effect to arouse the friends of Mr. Sherman in that city toa renewed Interest in his behalf. Acall was issued yestet y morning, one hundved leading citizens and busine: advising amass meeting at some futw not more than two weeks distant, to organt Sherman Club, and to take such action gener- ally as will promote bis political tuterests. It is expected that the meeting when held will be largely attended by residents of other parts of the state, and that the occasion will be im- proved tor perfecting similar organizations in many other prominent place One of the lawyers who took care of Mr. Wi Ham H. Vanderbilt's interests in the suit, grov ing out of bis late father’s will, has presented to that gentleman his little bill for lezai services in the case, The money value of these services is placed at the modest sum of $250,000. This amount Mr. Vanderbilt refuses to pay, on the ground that it is excessive and the lawyer, It is said, will commence sult for {t at once. The bill fs an outrageous one, and out of all propor- tion to the extent or character of the services rendered, and In resisting its payment Mr. Van- derbilt will doubtless have the sympathy of the public, whatever it may think of his practices asaratlway manager. The chances are, how- ever, that the bill will ultimately have to be paid, in the greater part, at least, if not wholly. By some construction of law and facts which plain people are not able to comprehend ex- actly, lawyers are regarded as their officers by the courts; and it isa cold blooded animal indeed that doesn’t look after the welfare of its own. The combinations of the situation are such that a client hasa very poor show for st s in a contest with his lawyer. Every lawyer hopes Some time to be a judge, and nearly every judge may some time become a lawyer again. Isn’t it likely, therefore, that but there is no use following the thing out. Readers can do that for themseives. The reported discovery of Masonic emblems under the obelisk at Alexandria famillarly known as Cleopatra’s Needle, seems to be re- garded as of greater consequence by certain newspapers than it ts by the leading members of the Masonic order Itself, The latter look upon the find as Interesting, but not espectally im- portant in an archaeological point of view, so far at least as the order is concerned. Thase best versed in its history and literature do not, We believe, claim for It an age so great as this discovery would indicate, and not a few con- Sider it a great plece of folly to suppose that Free Masonry as It now exists was known at the time this obelisk was made, or even when it was put in the place from which it has lately been removed. That such emblems or devices have been dis- covered scems reasonable enough, but that they prove anything, or that they can be shown to have any connection with things ting at the Present Ume, cannot be so easily admitted. It 1s quite within bounds to say that among the In- numerable and varied hieroglyphs which cover the ancient tombs, monuments, and butdings of Fxypt can be found a semblance or counter- par for the signs, emblems or devices adopted by every orde eet or religious falth now known to the world. With the ald of a little enthusias- Uc Imagination the keness may easily be seen, but to establish 4 connection in thelr meanings ig another matter altogether. Proofs are entire- ing, and the distance {s too great to be ctorily bridged by fanc Since it has become evident that the so-called excdus cf colored people from North Carolina was the direct result of an effort on the part of @ railway company to Increase {ts carrying trade, it will be hard work to convince the country that the movement grew out of hard_ Ships imposed on the blacks in their old home, on the one hand, or out of the schemes of political Managers to make Indiana a reliable republican State, on the other. The motive watch secms to have prompted it a seltish and unworthy one, to be sure, but in spite of that the migra tion which it brought about promises to be pro- ductive of good results. So far the effect has Deen to take labor from where there was an ex- cess, and place it where It was much needed. By good management at both ends of the line the inovement can be held at that point, and while it is held there senstble and disinterested People cannot well object to it. ee eee The reports of the foreign grain market No? favorabie to arise in prices In season to Save the American grain syndicate from col- lapse. The Mark Lane Express, the organ of the Bri ‘sh grain trade, says that it ts unlikely that aLy marked rise can be expected before May or June. It will not cause the American heart any sorrow if the grain ring comes to grief. Speculators in the staff of life are reck- oned as public enemies, and everybody will be glad to hear of their breakdown. ‘The Maine fustontsts have held the field with Pluck and perseverance in the face of many ob- Btacles, but they seem now to have reached their last ditch. The answer of the Supreme Court of Maine to their questions seems to Jeave them without legal status, » °y are not likely to keep on playing legislature many days longer. —_—— CB thal TOOTH BRUSHES.
