—_—_—_—_—_—__ THE EVENING STAR. WASHINGTON, MONDAY january ‘26, 1880. cr OSBY S. NOYES....Editor. Average Daily Circulation over 17.750— being a much larger bona fide, requiar and permanent circulation than that of ail the other daily papers in the city added together. aotic condition of political af- {3 such as to forbid any caten- Jation as to how that state will go in the com. ing presidential election. A combination of democrats and repuniieans, Known a3 readjust- ers, controls the legislature, and the managers, So far, have kept thelr organization well in hand as far a political objects are concerned. The regular democratic, or as {t 15 called “con- servative” party repudiates those of Its former followers who are among the readjusters. It proclaims them deserters, and announces that they shall not have ayy part in the presiden- tial canwass or any recogaition by the natiopal convention. Theregular republican party takes the same course with regard to its members who are now with the readjusters. Repub Hcan readjusters wiil not, so it is an- nounced, be recognized by the regular state organization, unless they ‘renounce the “unholy aillance” that now controls the legisla- ture. Meantime the readjusters declare that they are backed by a majority of the people democrats and republicans, and that they in tend to paddle their own canoe. Should the readjusters decide to support the republican presidential ticket they would, in ail probability. be able to carry the state that way. Should they support the democratic candidates, then the result would be as good asd favor oft ular conse the st been rept ated and de- ‘d by both the old parties, the readjusters may refuse to support the ticket of either. This would leave them no alternative but to support ihe ticket which the greenbackers evidently in- tend to nominate. A triangular contest in national politics in Virginia would still leave the chances in favor of the regular democratic ticket, forthe reason that many democratic re- adjustors would, no doubt, stand by their old party in preference to a greenbacker. But, tt would be possible for the republicans, by ral, ing all their strength, and making a vigor: canvass, to slip in between the conservatives and readjusters, and carry the state by a plural ity. The eleven electoral vo of Virginia might determine the presidential election, one way or the other, and therefore the question of doubt that now hangs over the result in that state fs one of interest and importance. ee ee ‘There was acrash in the wheat market § Y, and, asin the break in the stock market not long since, the small speculators are the sufferers. The heavy speculaters organized a syndicate last fall for the purp f bulling the wheat market. They forced the price up Steadily until small speculators entered the market ip large numbers. The latter continued to purchase blindly, apparently taking no notice ef the enormous quantittes of wheat that were gathering in warehouses and other place of storage. At the time that suited their pur- pose the bears assisted the decline and the crash came. Wheat fell from three to five cents per bushel Saturday, but though there were many rumors of firms being involved, it turned out that only one was much crippled. The small speculators were about the only sufferers. The crash, how- ever, had the effect. of reviving the exportation of wheat to a considerable extent, and it {s Possible that it may continue, aud in the end involve the syndicate of large speculators. Leading shipping men of New York say that if the syndicate have money enough to hold out longer than their European cnstomers, the former will come out victorious in their grand Scheme; but the fall in the market and conse- quent revival of exportation may result badly for the syndicate. There is more idie tonnage now lying at New York and other ports than was ever known besore, the result of the grain blockade, brought about by the manipulations of the speculators, ee The republican government in Maine sééms to have allowed itself to be frightened at shadows, or, what 1s just as unsubstantlal, rumors. The fusionists are in no condition to invite a settlement of the issue they have raised, evidently realize this fact. Wied) admits that his party is too weak to undertake any aggressive mea- s. The republican government is recog- nized as the legitimate one by a very 1: mafority of the citizens, by all the clvil officers of the state, and by the entire militia force. The fusionists have nothing with which to com- bat all this array of power, and, therefore, they are not likely to do anything to bring about the employment of force. They have submitied their list of questions to the supreme court of the state, and though the court may not hold itself bound to consider them, it will probably do so, inorder to deprive the fusiontsts of any turther excuse for holding together. The debate in the fusionist “legislature” upon the propriety of submitting these questions indicated that a majori least, had determined to abide by the decision of the court. In fact, the maia reason urged by the few extreme fustouist lead ers against presenting the questions to the court was that an adverse decision would result in breaking up the fusion legislatur Cincinnati is marking arrang a railroad combination, and, if effected, be a formidable one. The project fs to combine the Cincinnati Southern, Western and Atlantic (from Chattanooga to Atiantay, and G Central (from At vannah). This would give Cincinnati an ou to the Attantte, be. sides excellent connections for the south trade. Temple Bar, that famous old London lan mark which for so many years arched the ear- riage aud foot ways at the dividing point be- tween Fleet street and the Strand, and whieh was entirely removed last summer, is to be re- erected, as all lovers of old things will be glad to know, tn Victoria Park. An effort Is to made to have it put up exactly as it was origi- nally, without being scraped or cleaned or otherwise made to look new. ee Admirers of the writings of Chariotte Bronte and those in any ted in things re- lating to her, will learn with regret that Ha- worth church, where she and her family wai Shipped, has been utterly destroyed—the square western tower only having been al.owed to re- matn—tin order to erect a new edifice in what called “the perpendicular style. The Grant boomers in Washington say that the statement just sent out over the wires, thai Grant Is to be withdrawn as a candidate, is a Weak device of the enemy—that is to say, the united fleld of the other candidates. They as- sert their unimpaired confidence that he will be Lominated upon the first ballot This work of providing Memphis with an ex- tensive system of sewerage has veen placed un- der the supervision of Col. Waring, of New York, editor of the Piumber’s Jovwrnat, and an eminent sanitarian. It is intended to construct fifty miles of sewers by the middle of next May, and this, together with other sanitary work to be perjormed, it is believed will put the city in 4 condition to defy yellow fever.
