THE EVENING STAR. .January 21, 1880. SS CROSBY S. NOYES....Editor. ‘Tue Sran has a direct wire from its news room to the Western Union Telegraph office in New York « city, from which wires radiate to all parts of the Slobe, and is therefore enabled to secure the latest ews by its own operator from every quarter up to within a few moments of going to press. It is the — only evening paper south of Philadelphia which re- ceives exclusively the Associated Press dispatches. ‘Whe Electric Light Specuintion. The first announcements of the “complete success” of Edison’s electric light were received Without any doubt of their truth by the public generally, and there were loud acclaims and maby congratulations as to the great revolu- tion soon to be accomplished. But there were afew, here and there, who insisted upon more substantial proof of the success than Mr. Edl- son’s assertion, and when the “grand public illumination of Menlo Park,” promised for New Year's eve, did not take place, it began to be Whispered that the eleciric ght boom was nothing more or less than a movement to bull electric light stocks. Even those who doubted the success of the electric light were slow to believe that -Edison, who had achieved dis- Unction asa scientist, would lend himself to any such scheme. The pubile will, no doubt, be Inclined to continue to hold Mr. Edison guiltless of participating in the stock jobbing scheme, but late foreign papers contain some curious dispatches which indicate that somebody has been taking Hberties with the inventor's name as well as his operations in connection with the electric light. The Paris Figaro, of the 3d instant, contained a cable Message from Jersey City stating that during the week jive houses had been lghted with the “new electric lamp of Edison;” that “the suc- fect,” and there was “a great fall ” also, that the shares of the Edl- son Electric Light Company wed at 500 francs, were quoted at nearly 20,000 francs.” The London Times of January 4th published a Special telegram from Philadelphia, of that date, announcing that Edison's horse-shoe lamps continued to burn successfully, 3 ‘sclentific criticism of the invention ceased, as the public regarded it as suet The Figaro telegraphed to Edison him: quiring about the truth of this statement, and on the 6th published the following as the reply MENLO Park, January 4, 1 “Times telegram correct. ‘Practicability and economy greater than claimed. All houses here lighted ten days. A special correspondent of the Edinburgh Scotsman telegraphed from Paris all the infor- mation contained in the dispatches referred to to his paper and added a great deal more in the way of information he had collected, all going to establish the complete success of the electric Ught. All these dispatches contained announce- ments of the tumbling of gas stocks, though the fact is that they had very litue intluence in that direction. Even in Paris, where the most exag- gerated statements of Edison’s success were published, gas stocks held their own, and the Figaro of the 7th said the holders ot gas stocks are iron-clad. They have been so often scared by electricity that they don’t believe in it any more.” The same may almost be said now of the American people. They will have to be con- vinced by the most substantial and demonstra- ble proofs of the practicability of electric ight hereafter before they put any faith in it. Whether or not Mr. Edison knew anything of the movement to inflate electric light stocks, it is quite plain that one existed. Senator Vance has introduced in the Sen- ate a bill toregulate the practice of dentis- try in the District. This bill has the ap- proval of the Washington City Dental Society, and it ought to become a law. We have hereto- fore spoken of the fact that of all the cities in the Union Washington alone is without any Sort of law to protect the people from quack dentists. The provisions of the bill now in the Senate appear to be liberal enough to the regu- lar dental profession and rigid enough against quacks and imposters. Every person desiring ‘to practice dentistry in the District is required to submit to an examination board to be appointed by the Dental Soctet For this ex. amination the successful applicant for permis- sion to practice must pay five dollars, which goes to a fund to pay the expense of enforcing the law. In this way the public ts relieved of all expense for the enforcement of the proposed aot, andthe regular dentists here express en- lure willingness to bear the burden in order to Protect their profession against imposters. ‘There does not seem to be a single provision in the bill to which a person qualified to practice dentistry could object. ———-+e-—____ The meeting at Lincoln Hall last night in be- half of the suffering people of Ireland was most creditable to Washington city, both in the num- bers and character of the assemblage, and in the handsome amount contributed for the re- Nef fund. It should perhaps be stated that the Purpose in view in this relief movement in Washington is to furnish prompt material aid tothe starving people of Ireland, and that it has no connection with the political mission of Mr. Parnell, which, though a matter of interest and importance, {s not so pressing as the con- sideration how to supply bread in season to those perishing. +o The readjusters of the Virginia legislature have allowed their greed for office to outweigh every other consideration. They have given no thought to anything beyond the division of ‘Spoils. No matter how trivial a clerkship might be, it has been deemed of sufficlent importance for them to caucus over and sometimes quarrel over. They have even denied to the state ofi- cers whom they have chosen the pelvilege of selecting their own assistants. The flat went forth that these petty clerkships must beat the disposal of members 0° the legislature, and one state officer has aiready threatened to resign, in disgust, because the “party” seeks to appoint his assistants while holding him responsible for their actions. Gov. Holliday, however, has brought the greedy hunt for office toa short Stop. He refuses to commission the men chosen by Bthe readjusters as county judges, on the grounds that the terms of the incumbents have not yet expired and that the persons elected are ‘unfit to hold the positions. This has intensified the bitterness existing between the couserva- tives and readjusters, and !t does uot seem probable that they can be brought together upon even a presidential ticket. —_-e -—__ ‘The members of the woman’s convention now In session in this city will doubtless be gratified to know that their general efforts in behalf of their sex are bearing good fruits, not only in this country, but in foreign lands as well. One Of our English exchanges received by yester- Gay’s mail notes the fact, as “a sign of the times,” that a lady has been appointed to the ‘post of librarian at the recently established free Ubrary at Blackpool, a well-known Lancashire Watering-place. <= -__ ‘The New York Herald is attracting attention by the constancy with which it has adhered— tor nearly a week, now—to its Conkling boom. ‘This is believed to be without precedent in the history of that paper, since its nine day's adro- cacy of the claims of George Law (“Live Oak soll for the presidency. There 1s no doubt, however, that the Herald is right in arguing that Conkling would stand about the best chance of any republican of carrying the pivotal State of New York. —$—$_{_..__ Comparisons are odious, it is true; still one can’t help observing the fact that while the roler of the vast British empire, and the pos- ‘sessor of untold wealth, contributed $2,500 to Yelleve the sufferings of her own ‘starving sub- Jecis in Ireland, Mr. Corcoran, the private citi- zen of another country three thousand miles @istant, generously sends $1,000 as a token of his sympathy with the poor and down trodden. ‘What Englishman has done as much? —<—$__-.6—_—_ evening, is telegraphed from New ‘York. ‘This reminds us that Clara Morris hasn’t ‘been reported seriously ill for a long time.
