Another convention was tormed at 6:45 p.m. The committee representing both branches, waited upon Governor-elect Davis, and soon _re- ported that he would forthwith attend the con- vention to take the oath of office. As he entered the hall, attended by the council and several prominent gentlemen, the audience rose and the air was rent with deafening applause. Men jumped upon the seats and upon each other’s shoulders, pounded with canes, and manifested thelr joy in every possible way. As Gov. Davis stood atthe right of the President, and faced toward the audience, the applause broke out In, and three cheers followed for Davis, for Blaine, for Boutelle, Chamberlain, Nash and Sproul. After quiet had been restored Gov. Davis took the oath of office, and delivered an address, in which he said: “You have kept strictly within the law. Coming from law- abiding communities, you have waited until you could obtain the opinion of the court. That opinion has been rendered, and to-day you com- p leted the organization of the fifty-ninth legis- ature. Believing this solution of the difict eal problem ts a striking lustration of the strength. of republican government. where only majority can rule, and that all good citizens will joyfully hail it as such, Iwill only add that I shall take an early opportunity to express to you my views upon state affairs.” ‘The governor took possession of the executive chamber without any interference. The only obstacle placed in the way by the fustoni during the day was the refusal of the deputy secretary of state to give up the gubern: returns, but certified copies of_the clerk te. turns were substituted. At 7:45 p.m, both branches of the legislature adjourned. GEN. CHAMBERLAIN SURRENDERS HIS COMMAND TO G@Y. DAVIS. Saturday evening Mr. Davis wrote to Gen. Under this and immediately below I found a white marble slab, representing the apron, extending across the foundation of pons syenite granite, 102 inches long and 51 Inches broad and 254; inches thick, the upper halt hewn into a perfect square. ‘At the same level and touching the short section of the square and in the west angle of the foundation I found another block of syenite granite mai edly regular in form, the surface of which rep- resented rough ashlar steps and the foundation of which was composed of white granite. Be- sides these four pleces I found other less no- Uceable and Important but equally siguiticant embiems.” 3c ‘THE PREDICTION OF THE GOOSE BONS. — ‘Though “Old Prob.,”as a weather prophet, ap- pearsto give universal satisfaction, the farmers of Kentucky will not relingulsh their faith tn the prediction of the goose bone. It is consulted regularly, and the farmers prepare to handle thelr crops in accordance with its predictions. ‘As the goose bone was formerly regarded as a prophet of great accuracy in many parts of ew Englaud, it will y pomaps be of interest to know how to read 1 ts ions. We must take the breastbone of a last spring’s goose, none other will do, for the prophecy does not extend beyond the year in which the goose is hatched. It must be divided in three parts, which repré- sent the three divisions of the winter. The breastbone of a Ures is translucent, but at places has cloud-like blots upon it! These lots denote cold weather. The goose bone of this. year denotes that our coldest weather will come about the middle of February, and our warmest fires will be required for the first days of spring. §2- A drunkard at Battle Hill, Kansas, re- solved to reform or die.
