oo THE EVENING STAR. DOUBLE SHEET. WASHINGTON, SATURDAY... . January 3, 1880. CROSBY 8S. NOYES....Editor. Average Daily Ctreulation over 17.750— being a much larger bona fide, regular and permanent circulation than that of au the other daily papers in the city added together. ‘Tae Stan has a direct wire from its news room to the Western Union Telegraph office in New York city, from which wires radiate to all parts of the globe, and is therefore enabled to secure the latest news by its own operator from every quarter up to within a few moments of going to press. It is the only evening paper south of Philadelphia which re- ceives exclusively the Associated Press dispatches. A Bunkum Bill. Petitions favoring the passage of the “ Weaver bill” are being circulated among the ex-union soldiers and sailors of this country, and clubs of this class of citizens are being formed, with the view of influencing the action of Congress upon this measure. The professed object of the bill is to pay to themen who served tke union cause, or their heirs, the difference between lhe green- back and gold values of their wages while en- gaked in the service of their country. Its real ob- ject is to bolster up the decayed greenback in- fation by appealing to the suppori of the soldier element. Mr. Weaver proposes an issue of $50,000,000 new legal tepder Treasury notes, to megt the expenditure called for by his bil. "This, it is estimated, would not be half enough, but this fact would not constitute an objection to the measure, in the minds of the in- flationists. They hope to retain some hold upon the popular favor, or rather vote, by promising to give “money” for nothing; to put “money” into circulation by the wholesale, and let every body grab for it. The originators of this Weaver scheme do not expect it to succeed In Congress; they expect it to meet the defeat it deserves, and they intend to make use of the vote that kills the bill to help keep alive their dylog party. By saying to the union soldier element that it was the greenbackers who tried to enrich them by Congressional enactment, they hope to get some proportion of that ele- ment to vote for their “party” in future. That is about all there ls in the Weaver bill. It is nothing more than a device to catch votes. ——_—___—_o-______ The Chief Magistrates of the United States have, as arule, livedto an old age which, the Cincinnati £nquirer thinks must furnish some ‘consolation to venerable politicians with presidential aspirations.” There have been nine- deen Presidents, including the present incum- ent, and those who attained the position whrough the death of their predecessors. Gen, «rant is the only ex-Pre-tdent living. Of the seventeen ex-Presidents who have “crossed the river,” John Adams reached the great age of ninety years and elght months. James Mad- ison died at eighty-five, Thomas Jefferson at eighty-three, John Q. Adams at eighty, Martin Van Buren at seventy-nine, Andrew Jackson at seventy-eight, James Buchanan at seventy- seven, and Millard Fillmore at seventy-four. James K. Polk had the shortest life of all, be only fifty-three at his death, Abraham Lincotn was fifty-six. No other ex-President died under the age of sixty-four, The average age of the seventeen who are dead was seveniy-two and three-quarter years. Counting in Grant and Hayes at thelr present ages, fitty-eight,) the average age of the P; esidents would only be reduced to seventy-one years. These statistics may have a tendency to induce ex-Governor Seymour to listen to the voice of ‘his party, which ts crying out to him irom the wilderness, as it were. Tne St. Louts Times, though a democratic paper, favors the colored exodus from the South. It says: “There are enough white people in the North to take half the negro population—two or three millions—without much danger. The negro would soon tind his true level as an amiable, complaisant mental, or a clumsy, but cheap; field hand, as soon as he to be regarded as kindling wood for political bonfires, as a pet, aphenomenon or a martyr. Let them go North: Hurrah for the exodus’ @nly we protest that Missouri has her share now, and does not need any more till the pro rata is equalized, say in Kansas, !owa and Minnesota. This is one of the arguments that Senator Windom and others have advanced in support of the exodus. They say that to distribute the negro population over the country so that they will not be in the majority in any locality will remove all object for interfering With thetr civil rights, and take the negro question out of poll- tics, After all, the exodus is a question that Taust settle itself, If a colored man chooses to leave one state and locate in another, there is uo legal way to prevent it, and in making such move he is apt to be prompted by the same motives that would act upon a white man. The colored people who are doing well in the South, will be likely to remain there, and those who think they can better their condition by a re- moval will be willing to try it. <2 —_____ While the attention of the whole world seems to be just now directed to Edison’s marvelous achievements at Menlo Park, the public should not lose all sight of the Keeley motor,—an tn- veation which promises, if ever perfected, to ‘work as important results in one department of life as the electric light does In another. That project,—hardly less wonderful than E4ison’s,— is not dead yet by any means. Ata meeting of the directors of the company held in Philadel- phia on Tuesday, Mr. Charles G. Francklyn, the New York agent of the Cunard steamship com- papy, was elected a member of the board to fill a vacancy recently created by death. This action not only indicates considerable vitality, but the acceptance of a directorship of the company by ‘sO substantial and conservative business man as Mr. Francklyn 1s evidence that men of char- acter and capital still have falth in the claims of Mr. Keeley. Such are, howev: miuority at the present time. ‘There were nearly five hundred “mysterions disappearances” in the United States last year, and in many cases no trace of the missing party was ever found. In conrection with these sta- tistics is the statement that a large majority of those who disappeared and left no clue behind were married men, but whether this additional fact is simply {utended in the way of informa- tion or is meant to relieve the police, generally, oft responsibility for not unravelling the myste- ries by insinuating that most of the cases were hen-pecked benedicts fleeing from broomsticks and pokers, is left to conjecture. —— of the Cleveland Leader, the Tash enough to assail the vera- olty of General Boynton, of the Cincinnati @: zette, Mr. Boynton applies the scalpel to Mr, Cowles in reply with severity tempered by neat- hess and celerity. Itis not a very safe opera- tion to stir Boynton up. ——-~e-__ "The Indianapolis Journal has pubiished inter- views with 1,151 republicans residing in differ- ent parts of Indiana, on the subject of their choice of a presidential candidate. Of that number 342 were for Blaine, 340 for Sherman, 330 for Grant, 38 for Hayes, 23 for Washburne, 14 for Garfield, and a few “scattering.” ‘There is nothing in this showing to any Of the three leading candidates. ——__—_~.-________ ‘That sterling weekly paper, the Prince Gor; tan, published at Upper Marlborough, has en- tered upon its nineteenth volume. —__--_____ There are 121 new advertisements in Tae STaR to-day Bad Dreams, Disturbed ach Gas, all vanishes before Indigestion, Bitters. ay vieentys aa. cuaeh are redi from 2 Beautiful bikck et ue T5C. ; Earls Rid apr.
