Average Daily Circulation over 17.750— being a much larger bona fide, regular and permanent circulation than that of atl the other daily papers in the city added together. ‘Tur Star has a direct wire from its news room to the Western Union Telezraph office in New York city, from which wires radiate to all parts of the globe, and is therefore enabled to secure the latest newa by its own operator from every quarter up to within a few moments of going to press. JUST IMPORTED, AND FOR SALE At BEALL’S Bookstore, Z 495 Pa, ave. 2944 ‘This number has not been exceeded by any paper published south of New York city, with possibly two exceptions, and but by few In the entire country. ‘ —_+—~+-o-____ In the year just closed, Washington made very satisfactory progress in the way of in provements,—the erection of government bulld- ings and fine private residences, extensive paving work, tree-planting, statue-ralsing, adornment of parks, &c. The outlook for 1830 in the same direction 1s exceedingly hopeful. ‘The report of architects, real estate men, and builders, is, that plans are in contemplation for the erection of a large number of fine houses on private account. The work on the great gov- ernment buildings will proceed actively; the work of lifting the Washington monument to its contemplated height will be resumed in earnest after many years of inte: ruption; the District Commissigners proceed with their well-advanced task of making Washington the best paved city in the world; and it is hoped that the requisite authority will be obtained from Congress in season to com- mence early in the year the great work of re- claiming the offensive river flats, and trans- forming them from an eye-sore and plague-spot into a place of use and beauty; also, that other important work of increasing the water supply of the District, the necessity of which was shown at the Stewart mansion fire two nights since, which would have bzen much less aama- ging had the firemen been able on thelr first arrival on the ground to find full inains with a fair pressure. These works achteved, in connec- tion with the other tmprovements of the year, and Washington will have cause for a happy celebration January 1, 1831. There is a growing suspicion that the an- nouncements of the Edison electric Ught com. pany conceal a movement to “bear” the g: stock market. The st. Louis Globe-Democrat warns Its readers to be wary of crediting state- ments about the success of the electric light, es- pecially if they are interested in gas, because, it says, “no mention of Edison’s experiments with electric light 1s ever made, it seems, with- out an accompanying allusion to the effect he The Louisville Courier-Journal says “holders of gas stocks should be tn no hurry to get rid of their paper.” Other leading papers advise the gas companies to fortify themselves against improvements in light, that are sure to come, by reducing the price of gas to the lowest figures consistent with fair profit. In Wheeling (W. Va.) the city owns the gas works, and it supplies gas, of 15 and 16 candle power, to consumers at $1.20 per 1,000 cubie feet, with 10 per cent, discount if paid within ten days. This price yields a net profit to the city, after keeping the works in good order and extending and improving them to keep up with the growing demand. The city hospital in Cincinnati manufactures its own gas, and {t turnsoutan 1s-candle article at a cost Of 87%; cents per 1,000 cubie feet. In Pitts- burgh two companies supply gas at one dollar per 1,000 cubic feet, and they are realizing a profit at that price. People generally will be sat- isfled with gas if they can get it cheap and good enough. It furnishes an excellent light, and is easily controlled. Let the gas companies supply the public with a good quality of gas at low rates, and they need not fear the electric light. "There has been too much monopoly in gas, and that has created a prejudice against all the companies, but this prejudice can be removed by low prices and fair r dealing in future. ‘The king killers of Europe have made another faliure owing tothe poor markmansbip of the Instrument selected to perform the cowardly deed. The character of these would-be assas- ‘sins, who tremble so violeatly 2s they fire at the intended victim, 1s, alone, enough to Inspire contempt for the movement which prompts the act. There is, no doubt, some secret organiza- on al the bottoin of these attempted assassi- nations, but a disgusted enlightened sentiment refuses to credit it with the patriotism it claims. In the first place a géod cause fs never driven to assassination in order to make “tyrants tremble.” In no single instance have the “king killers” put forward as their chosen assassin a person worthy of even decent sym- pathy, Gonzales, who attempted the nurder of King Alfonso, Tuesday, was but a common waiter, and his cowardly heart beat so violently that he missed his mark by a jong distance. Then, when taken, he whined like a whipped cur and pleaded that he was not responsible; that he had been driven tbrough fear, to fire the shot. Itis not by such contemptible instruments as this that great causes for the public good are won. If one of the sovereigns whose lives have been threatened will but exercise a Uthe of his power against this cowardly and contemptible organi- zation of “king killers” they will, no doubt, take fright and each will hasten to surrender his confederates and save his own worthless car- cass by turning states evidence ————__— It is unfortunate that the few cases of smal'- pox at the Asylum occurred in a dull time of news in Washington, as some of the hard-up correspondents have utilized the fact to make up sensational despatches about a regular small- pox panic existing here, with hundreds of cases seattered throughout the city, &., &c. It 1s not necessary to say here that these stories are pure bosh. Small-pox exists to some extent in all cities. especially during the winter, and it is believed that there Is really less of it in Wash- Ington at this time than fn any other city of the same number of inhabitants tn the country, ‘The few cases here are entirely under control, there ts no scare whatever, and no danger that the disease will make any dangerous headway —___—--___—_ - General Ynighez, a “Cuban patriot,” believes the insurgents can succeed in winatng their tn- dependency from Spain.
