SPECIAL MEETING OF THE TRUSTEES. ‘The Board of Public School Trustees held a spe meeting last evening—Mr. Curtis in the ehair—to consider the question of substituting for the plan of the new school building in the first district, originally agreed upon, a differen” and less expensive one. ‘This is the buitdt tor which a contract had been made with Mr. ylor, Commissioners ‘Dent and Morgan, and ¢ inspector, Mr. Entwisle, were tt ecnfer With the school trustees an the subject and Mr. Dent said that the Comfmissione! aseertained that it would be impracticable to ¢ rect both of the buildings (this one and thaton Capitol Hil) on the origtnal plan. Mr. Richards, one of the sureties on the bond of the failing contractor, Was at work on the building in the eastern part of the city, The building in the first distriet could not be erected for the amount of the original contract, and it had been sugges- ted whether it would not bs better to complete the building on a cheaper plan. Mr. Samson suf ted that they could go on in accordance with the plans and ask a de- ficlency appropriation. Commissioner Morgan replied that there was nothing so Tena i in Congress as a deficiency, and that they better do the best they could with the mary they had. At tat time the owner was a Senator from the state of Nevada. Its cost, a5 well as the cost of furnishing it, has been stated at various amounts. Mr. Cluss was the architect of the building, which cost about | $50,000, amd the furnishing of it did not cost much less. Much of the furniture was made to order in Europe, and the ¢: ts and lace hang- ings were also Imported, and were very costly. Many fine paintings and works of art were lost by this fire and cannot easily be replaced. For a great portion of the time since Tt was completed and furnished the building has been unoccupied except by the servants and watch- | man. Sometime in the early part of the seo summer Mrs, Stewart arrived here and | possession, and has been living here ever Hee uring this time it is stated she has expended $15,000 in repairs and improvements, It is stated that a lew years since the house was in- sured for $60,000, but at the present time a policy | of only $20,000 is all the insurance there is upon it. The damage by water will probably be found to be considerable, as it was necessary to throw it upon the top of the building, and it "percolated through all the iloors.
