THE EVENING STAR. WASHINGTON. MONDAY. .December 29, 1879. “CROSBY Ss. NOYES Editor. vera Giroulation 0 over 17.750— Daily oa much larger bona fide, reqular aaiiy papers tn city ig ‘together. 9 peracid ‘THE Stan is connected with the wires of the Na- tional Telephone Exchange and with the Western Union Telephone Exchange. Both these agencies can therefore be availed of in sending to Tae STAR Advertisements, orders for the paper to be serve, news, or any information, at any our of the day free of charge. These facilities are a creat conve- nience, and will be appreciated by the customers of ‘Tur Stan. ‘The Edison Ligh’ Mr. Edison maintains, with the utmost con- fidence, that his electric ight ts a complete suc- cess, and of late he ts described as “+ enthust- astic” over the result of his labors. He inststs that he has solved every prodlem that has hitherto puzzled scientists in their eTorts to make electricity take the place of gas, and that his Ught 1s “af last a perfect one.” Mr. Edison atthibuies his of the use to which carbonlzed paper could be put. His ght fs emitted from a lamp whic simple in construction. The carbonized paper is about two and a-half inches long and the thickness of a thread; it Is shaped like a horse-shoe and put into a glass giobe, fr Which the air been exhausted. Platinum clamps are attached to the ends of this car- bonized paper, and from these are ran platinum wires, which are met by copper wires connec Ing with the conductors of electricity. A current of electricity, Mr. Elson claims, makes the carbonized arer incandes- cent, and this current pisses over it without fusing the paper. tere {3 no oxygen to burn,” sald Mr. Edison, speaking of this carbonized paper, “this plece of carbon will nary life-time.” ‘The cost of one of e carbon horse-shoes {s estimated at one cent, and the entire lamp is put down at 25 cents. Prof. Henry Morton, president of the Stevens Institute of Technology, New however, pronounce “conspicuous failure.” Edison’s electric light a He readily admits that Mr. Edison has produced a light that illumin- ates his workshop and the streeis of the villa in which it ts located, but he maintains that the light ts not and cannot be mae permanent. Prof. Morton says that lamps in all essential respects ider.tical with those now employ Edison have been in experimental use for sev. eral ye with “one invariable that while the carbon would ope fully for periods varying from a few hours to several days, it has been found utterly impos- sible to render them reliably permanent.” He refers to Edison’s experiment of a year or so ago, and says that he (Morton) was then taken to task by friends for pronouncing It a failure, but soon afterwards Edison himself aban- doned it as such. Mr. dard, of New York city, secretary of the Edison Electric Light Company, does not seem to express himself with any great degree of con- fidence, 18 an interview with a Times reporter He said the company had no doubt of Mr. Edi son having perfected his light to such an extent that it “can be supplied equal to gas, be as easily managed as gas, and be furnished at a cost not greater than that of gas.” This lan- guage falis very far short of the claims of Mr. Edison. Ii the new light ts not to be an im- provement and cannot offer inducements in the way of cheapness, then it can hardly be expect- ed that the people will take hold of it. Gas pipes and fixtures will not be cast aside for other pipes and fixtures, unless they can supply a better light or a cheaper light. It 1s now an- nounced, too, by Mr. Edison and Mr. Goddard that the much-talked of illumination of the vil- lage of Menlo Park will not take place New Year's Eve, for the reason that there are not lamps enough to make the illumination as ex- tensive as the inventor desires. Mr. Edison says, however, that the promised illumination shall take place soon, perhaps within ten days, and that he will Ight every house in the village and all the streets, and he will keep the lights burning for at least two weeks. ‘There is an almost universal desire that the Edison light shall prove the success he claims it is. This sentiment does not grow out of any particular fondness for Edison, but it 1s one of self-interest. Gas bills have caused more com- plaint and as much profanity as anything that ever irritated the human famfly. Every man, and every woman too, thinks the gas bill 1s too large for the amount of benefit conferred, and the public will gladly take hold of a new and better Rght. But, it will not do to put entire confidence in Mr. Edison’s claims of success yet. Ee ro doubt believes he has accomplished all that bis hopes depict, but, as Prof. Morton says the stumbling-blocks that have overthrown alj inventors of electric light heretofore have been durability, and divisibility without too much loss of power. These are the tests that the Edison light must yet stand. —_——_o-—____. England's Troublesome Afghan Cus- tomer. News from the British forces operating in Afghanistan must be received with several grains of allowance, because of the censorship that has been established over the press corres- pondents by the British authorities in that country. Giving due consideration to the color- ing the press reports must receive at the dicta- tion of the authorities, however, there can be no doubt but that an important victory has been won by Gen. Roberts at Cabul It may not be as sweeping and complete a victory as the official reports represent, but it is none the less important and beneficial to the goverameat party in England just now. Gen. Robert's posi- tion has been a most critical one, and that fact has been known throughout Great Britain. A general uneasiness prevailed, and there was apprehension that the next news from Gen. Roberts would tell of a disastrous defeat to his forces. While this feeling was demonstrated on every hand, Lord Beaconsfield maiatained a self- assured demeanor, and proceeded to carry out his policy as though no danger threatened. He was criticised, even by his supporters, because he took no steps to prepare for shelter when the storm should break. This victory comes just in time to help Beaconsfield out of his dilemma, though it must be attributed more to his good luck than his good management. Even the London Times had taken the alarm, and ina recent editorial advised a withdrawal from Afghanistan. “ We can now retire from Afghanistan with honor and with safety,” sald the Times. “By and by the choice may not be open to us.” If the demoralization among the Afghan forces is one-half what it is reported to be in the dispatches from Gen. Roberts, it will bo Some time before the former can rally sufti- clently to make any sort of demonstrations. ‘This time will be employed, no doubt, in strengthening the English forces. Gen. Roberts is already reinforced by the command of Gen. Charles Gough, and one of his first acts will be, DO doubt, to re-establish communication tn his rear and supply his troops with the cloth- ing and other things they need. This will have & good effect upon his forces, and altogether the situation has been converted from the most gloomy and apprehensive outlook for Great Britain to one full of promise of success. ———_~-re-___ The excitement in Maine continues, but, happily, there ts less talk of bloodshed and vio- Jence than a few days ago. The republicans do not appear any the less determined to pos- ‘Sess the fruits of their victory at the polls, but the counsels of the wiser, cooler leaders have Prevailed, and peaceful, lawful measures are favored. There ts no evidence of any yielding on the part of Gov. Garcelon. He persists that he has doue but his duty, and will abide by it. ‘The fusionists are holding meetings and adopt- ing resolutions approving the course .of the governor. The churches have taken up the ‘quarrel, and congregations are divided. In ‘Some instances large factions have withdrawn from churches, and, altogether, the situation is a mest deplorable one. +——__ro-__. ‘The Repudicrn styles THE STaR a democratic paper because of its treatment of the Maine im- ‘brogiio, and a writer in the Capita! characterizes it asa Blaine Crgan on the same score.
