Bishop Pinckney. ‘The musie, of a fine order, was admirably given by a voluntary choir of 20 voices, directed by our well-known and highly talented organist, Prof. Geo. W. Walter, to whom great praise 18 due for bringing the choir to its present high standard. The soprano solos were finely sung by Mrs. H. Smith and Misses Maggie Smith and Carrie St ; the alto solos by Misses Laura Murdoch and Nellie Smith. The second soprano parts in quartette (Mosenthal’s Jubilate) and in trio of Kroel’s Te Deum were finely sustained by Miss Florence Reichenbaugh, who is the for- tunate possessor of a rich mezzo Soprano v voice of rare sympathetic quality, The solos for male voices were well rendered by our favorite tenor, Mr. Edwin Hay and Messrs. DEATH.—Mrs. Susan kL. D. Appleton. a well- known lady, formerly of Hamitton, Mass., but for the past Six years of this place, died at’ the residence of Miss Emily Dodge, on Congress street, yesterday afternoon of consumption, 1d 67 years. After the ceremony had been concluded in_handsome style, the groom, who resided in another part of the country, put his bride in a wagon, and_pre- pared to take her to his home. At this stage of the proceedings. a darkey, who had traveled, and sald that he knew thing or two about the customs of elegant. white folks, stated that {t Was always the style to throw sho: after the bride as she was driven off. The idea took {m- mensely. AS the happy couple moved awa: from the door the darkies jerked off their shi and hurled them at the vehicle. One darkey, who was the possessor of a No. 15 toot, threw a shoe with too inerring aim. The great missile flew through the alr and, striking the bride's skull, knocked her senseless in the bottom of the wagon. The groom jumped out and gave the thrower of the shoe a thrashing, cursing civlitzed eustoms with all his heart.—[daveigh His FIRsT APPEARANCE IN AN ELEVATOR.—A few days ago a man named Joseph Lacey, trom Merrimac Point, Mll., visited the St. Louis Re- publican office to see the sights. _He happened to go into the elevator without knowing what it was. Tae boy started the machine, and Mr. Lacey went wild with fright. He yelled for police, struck a violent biow at the elevator yy, and then made a jump and tried to break through the transom of a door, the level of which had just been reached. fe fell, and his head projected just over the edge of the platform. In another instant he would have nm de- headed but for the presence of mind of the boy, who reversed the engine just as Lacey’s neck to squeeze. The car moved back down, and as soon as Lacey caught sight of the giass entrance door on the first floor he dashed head- foremost through it, taking glass and sash with him.
