_THE EVENING STAR. WASHINGTON, FRIDAY December ‘26, 1879. 0 MIDDLE MEN. ORANGES direct caer ome — Grove, on the St, Lam receiving dei sly, NPLORIDA ORANGES from the above pli "The trade invite+ to examine at Sere TOLL New Fork aveni ue. Mot Average Daily Circulation over 17.750— being a much larger bona fide, and permanent circulation than that of all the other daily papers in the city added together. The Holiday Senason—Double Sheet. ‘The double sheet, or eight-page Srax of ffty- six columns, will be issued as usual to-mor- Tow, to meet the demands upon the advertising Space. The number of new advertisemnts thus far in December reaches 1,587. Advertisers will confer a favor by sending in their orders as early as possible for the enlarged and extra edition. A Bit of Unwritten History. ‘The Indianapolis Sentinel has hotsted at the top of its editorial page the name of ex-Gover nor Hendricks as a candidate for President, sub- ject to the decision of the National Democratic Convention. The New York Star, which speaks the sentiments of John Kelly by authority of the “chief sachem” himself, “welcomes Indi- ana’s favorite son tothe field,” and says the party could not do better than nominate him. At the St. Louis convention in 1876 Tammany stood by Mr. Hendricks to the last, and at- tempted all sorts of combinations to beat Mr. Tilden with him. When theconvention Insisted upon nominating Mr. Hendricks for Vice-presi- dent bis friends maintained that he would not accept, and there was a good deal of trepidation felt among the leaders lest thls might prove true. On the evening of the last day of the con- vention the New York and Indiana delegations met at the Southern Hotel and held aconter- ence. All but about eight of the New York delegation were warm friends and supporters of ‘Tilden from the first; the eight were the Tam- manyites, who, then as now, hated Tilden. At the conference that evening Lieutenant-Gover- nor Dorshetmer and others—who, like him, were known to have Mr. Tilden’s entire contidence— voluntarily made the pledge that if Governor Hendricks would consent to accept the second place on the ticket, he should in 1880 haveaclear field for the first place so far as Mr. Tilden was concerned. Judge Hanna and the other Indi- anians who had been telegraphing with Gover- nor Hendricks took the proposition under constd- eration, and after an hour ortwo—time enough to communicate by telegraph with Indianapolis— it was virtually agreed that Mr. Hendricks should run for Vice President, but that in 1339 he should have the support of Tilden and al! his friends and influence for the nomination for Président. Those who spoke for Mr. Tilden said he did not. care for more than one term of the Presidency. After the electoral commission had decided in favor of President Hayes, it was known among the friends of Mr. Hendricks that Tilden did not hold himself bound, any longer, to the agreement because he had “ been de- frauded of his offic He wanted another chance at it. Mr. Hendricks’ friends insisted that the Tesult was not the fault of their man, and the agreement should be carried out, Now, Mr. Dorsheimer and others who were prominent in speaking for Tilden at that conference, are lead- ing members ot Tammany, and bitter enemies of Tilden. Probably they intend to stick wo thelr part of the agreement, and that may ac- count for the early endorsement of Hendricks by the Tammany organ. ——___-++e -—__-_ Senator Bayard intends to press his resolution for consideration immediately after the reas- sembling of Congress, and this will force a dis- cussion of the financial question. There is no way of cutting off debate in the Senate. No previous question rules there, and a Senator has only to give notice that he wants the floor to ob- tain it. Mr. Bayard evidently means to insist upon his original resolution providing for an immediate repeal of the legal-tender feature of the greenbacks. He introduced the measure without consulting a single one of his party as- Sociates, and itis understood that he proposes to contend for it alone, if need be. He has been somewhat severely criticised within the demo- cratic circle for having taken upon himself, without even asking anybody's advice, the re- Sponsibility of committing his party—as far as he could speak for 1t—to a financial theory. He has probably learned, ere now, that he could have had the support of some who will remain sent, if he had only consulted certain of his party associates before presenting his resolu tion. The expressions of many of the southera Senators—about all the more prominent ones— Just before adjeurning for the holidays were to the effect that they were willing to join with Mr. Bayard in support of a measure to repeal the legal-tender power of the greenback at some future date, to be specified in the law for the repeal. These southern Senators are willing and anxious to form an alliance, politically or financially, or both, with the East, but they:wil, not consent to a sudden destruction of the legal- tenders. Even the hard-money Senators from the South object to this. Senator Butler, who has heretofore voted uniformly with Mr. Bay- ard, sald it would be “‘a great injustice to the debtor class to strike down, suddenly, the green- backs; that such an act would tend to divide the democracy in the South.” He was willing to join with Mr. Bayard, or anybody else, In the pas- sage Of a law to repeal the legal-tender feature of the greenback “‘in 1855, 1334, or even 1852, but time must be given for the people to prepare for it.” In the end, very probably, Mr. Bayard and those who support his position will have to accept some compromise of that kind. It seemed to be the opinion of the best Informed demo- cratic Senators that an agreement would be reached, yin January, upon the basis men- tioned by Senator Butler. Mr. Bayard will not be likely to yleld his resolution, however, with- out a trial; then, when it shall have been de- monstrated that it cannot be adopted, it is believed the compromise will be effected. Such a compromise will, in all probability, command Votes enough to put it through the Senate, but its fate in the House will be doubtful, to say the least. Gov. Garcelon, of Maine, no doubt deserves a good deal of the sharp censure just now showered upon him, but it should be said in his behalf that, some of the hard words applied to him do not fit. He isa thoroughly honest man and whatever mistakes he has made are due to obstinancy of temper rather than to any moral obliquity. In face and figure he much resembles Andrew Jackson, and he is as positive and self-willed as ever “Old Hickory” was. His home at Lewts- ton abounds with anecdotes of his peculiarities in this way, but nobody there of any political party would ever dream of charging him with wilful dishonesty. The only danger ts that his Jacksonian temper may betray him in the present. emergency into some hot-headed act ‘that will lead to bloodshed. Is ts probable that he has been worked upon to take his presentat- titude by Eben F. Pillsbury, of the Augusta Standard, who wants to be U. S. Senator in place of Hamlin, and who is generally looked upon as the Mephistopheles of the fusion plot- Ung in Maine. eee ‘The fail in gas 8 stocks in Europe and America following the last reported success of Edison’s electric light indicates that the gas companies, who have doubtless kept themselves pretty well advised of the progress of Edison’s experiments, think there is something 1n it this time. Tho ‘sctentific men, with the exception of Professor Proctor, sfill doubt whether the Edison light will prove a working success for general lighting Purposes; but that point 1s so soon to be tested practically that it 1s hardly worth Br waste very muca time in discussing the ques- jon. ——_-<-2—___ By a recent decision of the Supreme Court of California the contest over the Lick estate Is set- ted. John H. Lick, son of the deceased mtilion- aire, gets $385,000 more than his father inten ted he should have, and this amount comes out of the sum bequeathed to the Society of California Ploneers and the Academy of Science. All the other bequests for charitable and public benefits, alnounting in the aggregate to $1,745,000, remain intact, and will be paid. —__<re-__. Rev. Dr. J. P. Newman in an Interview denies the report that he and General Grant had ar- ranged to start an “anti-Popery hewspaper.” ile Says that sooner or later such a paper will ‘be started in New.
