Further particulars of the fight between the Ute Indians and ig oS Thornburgh’s command were received by telegraph last night: The courier who brought the dispatches from Capt. Payne says the Indians at the agency two days before the fight had sent all their old men, wo- men and children south, the warriors were dec- orated and painted in the usual war style, and they had threatened to kill Agent Meeker at the agency, and acremprod to burn the build- ings. Major Thornburgh, in moving forward, avoided a canon which he knew to be danger- usly suitable for an ambuscade, and went over a hill, when he discovered the Indians in am- bush on either side of the canon. He was urged to fire, but desisted,as his orders would not justify an attack. Two Indians now rode u within a hundred yards, dismounted, and with @ savage yell fired, shooting Captain Payne \hrough the arm. At this signal the war whoop was sounded by the Indlans, and the battle commenced, with the result stated, Thorn- burgh found that he was surrounded, and or- deied a charge, which he gallantly led tn per- son, ard succeeded in cutting his way out, and when within about 500 yards of bis wagons he fell dead, with two bullets through his brain. Captain Payne now took command, and the battle was carried on unt!l S$ p.m., the troops using the wagons and animals as breastworks. ‘The Indians fell back a short distance and went Into camp. The casualties are about as follows: Major Thornburgh, Lowry, the guide, and enlisted men, the wagon mastel Cae and one teamster, killed; Capt. Payne, Lawson, Surgeon Grimes. Lieuts. Paddoc! and Wolf, avd men, wounded. Major Thorn- burgh’s body was not recovered. REVORTED MURDER OF T MEEKER AND F. It was reported at Rawlings, Wyoming, tnat Agent Meeker and his family and all employes had been murdered and the agency buildings confirmation, rs were ilock- ing in to Rawlins for safety, and considerable excitement preva’ ‘alled. THE RESCUE. An Omaha aispateh says: The military au- thorities are unanimous in the bellef that the worst has now been told, for Capt, Payne 1s strongly entrenched near water, Is well Pro visioned and will fu r fortify himself by throwing up earthworks, which, with the train, will enable him to hold his own until re- Inforcements appear, which will be soon. Merritt at once began preparing for the expe- dition. AtCamp Douglass and Salt Lake tio time was lost, but everything was perfected at short notice, At Forts McPherson and Saunders the same activity prevailed. The champion went in the afternoon to get the belt, armed with an order from Mr. Busby, of The Tur/, Field and Farm, to Tiffany & Co., and he was then first informed of tine at- tachment. The checks for their shares in the receipts were given to all the winners yester- day except Weston’s; that awalts Mrs. Wes- Uou’s older. Some months ago the Christian Advocate, the New York organ of the Methodist Church, pub- lished an editorial commenting upon the alle- ‘ation that a member of the present cabinet had advised the President to avoid Grant's friends, and especially pot to allow himself to be influenced too much by Grant's church.
