THE EVENING STAR. WASHINGTON: MIONDAY.. August 25, 1879. CROSBY &. NOYES. AB their address by mail, postage P |, for Period of time an they may er, the rate 0€ 15 cents per week, 60 per month, $1.75 for Bizge months, or $3 tor etx months, money to pay for the time required must a 5 : - pistol and the shot-gun in politics is not con- Mined to the South or to democratic staies. The antecedents of the belligerents and the cir- cumstances of the case do not tend to create much sympathy for either of the men, but there ‘will be no hesitancy anywhere in characterizing the shooting of Kalloch as a cowardly and ruffianly deed. The person shot, the Rev. Isaac Kalloch, who left the Atlantic Coast some years ago forthe Pacific side with a reputation for morality pretty badly smeared, has practically abandoned the pulpit he disgraced, and set up as a demagogue orator, for which he has quall- fications in address and in a glib use of the tongue. He succeeded in ingratiating himself into favor with the so-called “‘Workingmen’s Party” of California, headed by Dents Kearney, and was their nominee for Mayorof San Fran- cisco. The De Young brothers were the proprie- tors of the Chronicle, the organ of the “Honorable Bilks” or new constitution party; a piper hay- ing a bad reputation for venality and scurrility, and which had exercised its foul tongue to the fullest in personal abuse of Kalloch, to the extent of assailing the reputation of his dead father. Kalloch retaliated by yet fouler abuse of the living mother of the De Youngs. No defense can be made for this brutal style of warfare, but as the De Youngs initiated it, apd bad the commana of the columns of a daily paper to keep§it up, they had no excuse Yor abandoning their chosen weapon, the pen, and resorting to the pistol when they found themselves surpassed in their peculiar feld of ‘Vituperation. Denis Kearney seems to have behaved better Im this emergency than might have been ex- pected. His influence, which seems to be po- tential yet with his party in San Francisco, has been thrown on the side of law and order, but At would appear probable that he has the sense to see that a resort to mob law by his follow- rs, ard the Inauguration of a reign of terror at ‘this time In San Francisco would be anything but advantageous to his projects for the future. Just now when he ts seeking to ges control of the government of that city at the coming election, he no doubt sees that it is policy for ihim to make a stand in behalf of law and order. It Is believed that the result of this shooting ‘Will be to help the workingmen’s ticket in San Francisco, and perhaps to elect’Kalloch mayor, should he survice the attack, which from the reports to-day is probable. In the state at Jange the affair will probably help the republi- cans to some extent. Charles De Young, the assailant, ts described 43 a young man of thirty-five, under the aver- age size, with frank manners and a pleasant Open face. He is said to be a man of no little force of character, who has built up one of the most widely circulated and prosperous papers 4n California. Mr. Kalloch ts a muscular Chris- tian, over six feet in height, and robust in pro- portion, “‘with a big head, full heavy red beard and mustache and the manner of a thoroughly Successful and self-reliant man of the world.” ——_—o-____. ‘Not much stock is taken here in the story that the Oblo democrats propose to abandon the cor- test for governor, considering it hopeless, with & view to directing their efforts to securing the legislature. It has the look of being a campaign yarn, such as is put out by turns by each politi- Cal party to inspire confidence in its own ranks, and to discourage the adversary. It is not near enough to the time of the election in Ohio to say who ts going to be governor. The re- publicans have, or express, the most confidence of victory, but the democrats are by no means slow in the game of brag, and they are able to makes very pretty show of reasons for demo- oratic success. ———$_—_—~--_____ ‘The unpleasantness between Mr. Tilden and Mr. Cyrus W. Field still occupies the attention of the New York papers. It seems, however, to be only another filustration of the oid saying that your best friend will cheat you in a horse trade, or a stock operation. It appears that Field sailed for Europe intending to make a mint of money by selling a big block of shares in the New York Elevated railroad and that ‘when he was in mid-ocean out of reach of com- Mnunication with the rest of mankind, even by his own Atlantic cable running beiow, his friend ‘and co-operator Mr. Tilden playing tne Heathen Chinee in a way that Mr. Field utterly despises, sold out his stock at the high premium then prevailing: the consequence of which was that the prices dropped from 195 to 140, and when ‘Mr. Field landed at Liverpool he found his con- templated sale “in block” effectually knocked in the head. Of course this sort of thing is ex- pected in Wail street, but Mr. Field seems to bave been the victim of a delusion that better faith could be counted upon from a Presiden- tal candidate than from an ordinary cut-throat broker. Senator Conkling has written a letter declin- ing the Invitation to deliver an address at a county fair in his state, “owing to the great de- mand upon his time.” The legal business which calls him to Narragansett Pier and other places cutside of York sta’e must be rather engross- ing. A report from Washington that the people engaged in the Grant movement have deter- mived, not merely to nominate the General anyhow, but that they mean to drag his name into the convention for a general scramble, in- @uces the New York Herald to say: “Surely nothing more is needed to prove that this Grant movement proceeds tndependently of General Grant, and without the least regard to his com- fort, dignity or good fame. They use him mnerely as a common officeseeker.” The Herald Just now positively refuses to boom for either Grant or Tilden, and thinks the country can be faved without them. Spendth'rft won so easy a victory at Mon- mouth park over an exceptionally strong feld Of three-year olds that a good many are think- ing he may yet give Falsetto the heels in a further test for the championship. —————~-___ The people of Yazoo once gave Capt. Dixon, in commemoration of his eminent services as a bull-dozer, a silver pitcher tnseribed “To the Bravest of the Brave.” As Barksdale has since Killed Dixon. it will be interesting to know what inscription Barksdale’s presentation piece Of stlver will bear. Manifestly, in the eyes of that community, he must be “a biger man” than Dixon. ——_—_—_+o+ There seems to be something wrong in the Barbusedepartment. The present contractor ts allow-d to cart the garbage leisurely about town in open barrels, and the smell thereof ts Certalaly most offensive whatever may be the @ffect upon the public health.
