STRENGTHENING THE FOUNDATION. ‘The work of strengthentng the foundation of the Washingion National monument (for which @ further appropriation of $64,000 has been made by Congress) is just about one-half com- Pleted under the former appropriation of $36,000, and will now be pushed with all possi- bie dispatch consistent with the safety of the Work ‘There are about 60 men are under the direct supervision of Mr. J. AT THE PARK. On arriving, there was a short rest and a lunch was served, President Wolf welcoming all to the 14th annual “feste.” The bowling and shooting was at once commenced, and at three o'clock there was a large assemblage on the Pavillon floor, where the fine orchestra of 11 in- struments, led by John B. ALEXANDRIA. = THRILLING RAILROAD ACCIDENT.—Intelligence Was received here to-day of a serious accident on the Atlantic, Mississippi, and Ohto Railroad. As express train No.4 was coming east. this a. 1n., the tire of the engine broke and came off, t 150 feet from a small bridge across a ‘kK, just west of Wytheville. The engineer and fireman jumped off immediately without injury. The engine left the track on the bridge and carried down one span thereof, with ex- press, mail, baggage and second class cars into the bed of the creek below, a distance of 96 feet. The express messenger, 8 young man named Langhorne, from Lynchburg, bas not been found and is supposed killed.
