She wasa native of Devonshire, and some twelve years ago was found by Tom Taylor, the dramatist, traveling through the provinces with her hus- band in a smail theatrical company. He was struck by her talent and beauty, and persuided her to visit London. He wrote for her specially the play of “’Twixt Ax and Crown” and with I she made a great hit in the metropolis. Afterward he wrote “Joan of Arc” for her. It had an extensive run at the Queen’s Thea- ter. CONVICTED HY A COLORED JuR t Austin, Tunica county, Miss., Wlillam Love, colured, Was tried for the murder of J. £. Sanderson, white, and a colored jury heard the case. Tey heard the evidence, the arguments of counsel and the charge of the court, and on Saturday last retired to consider a verdict. Ina short Ume the jury returned into court and the fore- man hatded the clerk the verdict, It read: “We, the jury, find the defendant guilty of murder, but recommend hiin to the mercy of the court.” The judge stated that under the verdict he would have to sentence the prisoner to the penitentiary, and ne asked the jury whether such was their intention in finding the verdict. The entire jury spoke up and sald, “No, sir; no, sir.” “Then, gentlemen,” sat the judge. “you can retire and find a verdict which will express your {ntention.” The jury retired, but returned in a few minutes with the following verdict: “We, the jury, find the de- fendant guilty of murder, a3 charged in the indictment.” The judge stated that under that verdict he would have to seatence the prisoner todeath by hanging, and he again asked the jury if they understood their verdict in that sense. The jurors unanimously sald, “Yes, sir; yes, sir.” Thereupon the prisoner, Wm Love, was sentenced by the court to be hanged. [Montgomery Advertiser. THE RABER MURDER-ConsPikacy TRIAL.—A telegram from Reading, Pa., April 21, says: be tam Nye was examined this afternoon in the Raber murder-conspiracy case. He testi- fied to the contradictory stories concerning the murder told by Drew. The witness fainted during bis cross-examination and the court adjourned until 2 p. m. When the court re- assembled Elijah Stichler, an uncle of one of the prisoners, was called and swore that Drew offered him $100 to drown Raber. Brandt first proposed chloroform. The witness was threat- ened with death if he divulged what they sald. Coroner Weber next gave his testimony. He Said he was offered $40 by Brandt for a good verdict, and that Brandt further stated tnere were five persons who would each give him $20 for a good verdict. He had been off at work and after waiting until late for her husband his wife sat down to tabie and was eating din- ner, when Bishop came in with an axe in his hand. He walked up to her and sent the keen blade of the axe crashing through her skull, literally splitting her head in half, the axe edge stopping only when it reacbed the trunk of the body itself. Bishop was arrested at once and from his way of talking he Is believed to be of unsound mind. He says he ts glad he did the deed and would do it over again and that he ‘Was forced to do it.
