Drvorce Case The Washington Presb) a Chief Justice Drake's Resolutio: In order to get at the true version of the dis- cussion upon Judge Drake's resolution to dis- cipline the members of the church for attend- ing the theater, a reporter of THE Stak called upon Dr. David Wills, one of the clergy who took an active part inthe discussion of the same, when the following colloquy took place: Star rter.—Doetor. I have noticed & con. trarietyjofistatement in the:press res} ane ee discussion had the other day on Judge Dien 's paper requiring all members of the church who attend theaters to be disciplined. There 1s nothing in the Bible, from Genesis to Revela- tions, which pronounces the mere attendauce on the theater as a sin per se. And there 1s nothing in the constitution or government of the Presbyterian Church which makes {t an ojene- in the sense of our discipiine—that is, an offence for which a member may be tricd and censured, You are not to infer, however, by this, that I am by any means an advocate of the theater. As constituted ard conducted, I think it has been a school of dissipation to the world, and ought rot to be patronized by Christian people. But T deem ail legislation of the church on this sub- ject as unwise and inexpedient. Some of our people occasionally drop in at tke theater, and to-attempt to discipline them would only stir up old Adam within them, and, perhaps, drive them intosome other denomination where they could exercise more liberty of cousctence. The truth ts, the whole subject of popular amusements is a very difficult, and delicate one for the church to handle, and to deal with it wisely cails for the utmost wisdom and prudence. We know that the church must protest in trumpet tones against the sins and follies ot the world; but there are many questions of doubtful expediency, which, at last, must be left to the individual Christian consclence. The right of private judgment must not be interfered with, The drama and the dance have always been the favorite amusements of refined and fashionable pedple. They involve the very structure of our modern soctety, and cannot be put down by proscription. We must offer men something better. This was Christ’s plan, and ‘sheuld be ov Star Keporter.—I am not, then, to understand that you condemn the legitimate drama? Dr. Wills —Certainly not. On the contrary, we regard it as marking the hizhest, type of civilization of the ages, and a true patron of genius and art. Hamlet isa gem of peerless excellence, and it seems to us that there 1s more good sense and good taste displayed in witnessing a fine performance of this play tha in reading sensational novels, which are a ca- ricature of the sober realities of life, or in at- tending masquerades to promote pious objects. My impression ts, that if ministers would gen- erally dip deeper Into Shakspeare there would be more salt in thelr sermons and fewer sleep- ers in the pews. Star Reporter.—y understand you to say that | the theater, as now constituted, is a i dissipation, and at the same time chureh members ought not to dise for attending it. Is there not an inconsis: in these two statements? Not a particle. Our position is ‘h members cannot be disciplined for an act which cannot be provento besinful from | the word of God; and no deliverances of our chureh courts apart from this authority ean be binding. You must iyo HOt conjecture, a man to be guilty of heresy or immorality be. a you can touch him with the rod of disc! pline. Star Reporter.—What remedy, then, do you pose? Dr. Wil's.—Just the same remedy we propose for all other evils of society, nately: higher culture. Raise the standard of piety in the church, and there will be but little trouble on this subject. In proportion, as you build up the health of the Dody of Christians you break down its diseases. Tired | and worn out with her day’s labors, she went to bed at night, with her litue babe, about ten months old, At 11 o'clock she was awakened by a hand on her throat and a voice saying, “Your money, or your life.” In the dim light which came turough the window she recognized | Carroll, and saw that he was brandishing a large | from brass- make the Thave hadralt Rheura on my body and -y avgravat-a form for elcet years. ‘other bed began crying, and Car- | kind of treatment, or medicine, or time, did we ap: Malden and eleewhere reat sufferer, and andied knife She replied, “I have no | mone: (are me.” At this juncture one of the an children roll called out, “Hush up, or I will kill you.” ‘Turning again to Mrs. Thomas he repeated his demand for money. Her reply was, “As Tama Christian woman, I have no money,” and then the fiend, with a firmer clutch at her throat, dragged her across the bed, accomplished his rpose and left. All through the long night pu the wretched woman lay more dead than alive. When her husband returned next day she told him the story of her sufferings, and then almost collapred from the mental and physical strag- gie torough which she had passed. Since that time she has been in bed, a low fever burning through her system, and the humiliation watch che has undergone, as she herself says, eating her very heart out. Dr. Wm. H. Johnson, the family physician, does not entertain a very heperul view as to her recovery, espectatly as she has always been predisposed to heart dis- ease. Her husband, who is well known and much respected in ‘the community, is utterly broken down under the biow. §3~A Fairbaven lass, with visions of a bridal trousseau before her eyes, has recently given the genteman who Is paying his addresses to ber a gentle hint, by presenting to him a neatly worked card upon which 1s inscribed, “I need theeevery hour.” CITY ITEMS.
