Communteations were received from a num- ber of teachers calling attention to the fact that a preceding board had artnet Good Fri- day and Easter Monday from the list of holl- days, and that there are so many who absent ESP URTU Perera day’s work, and they request that the schools be closed on those days. A communication from Superintendent Wilson recommended that the request be | gee Mr. Lovejoy moved that the request granted. Mr. Curtis catled attention to the actton of the board in dropping the days mentioned from the list of holidays. While these days were on the lists the Israelites used the argument that they should have their holidays inserted or that their children shoutd observe them without having the time charged tothem. If they again made these days holt- days the same trouble would ensue. He asked members to consider before acting: the number of school days they have now was Only about 190, Mr. Rhees suggested that Congress having pro- hibited egg roiling in the public junds may have led to striking out these holidays. If this was the cause he would suggest that the chil- dren go out in the county and roll their eggs. Mr. Lioyd saw no reason why the schools should be closed, foron these days the stores are all open and the people at work, Mr. Love- i, sald that the superintendent and teachers ad had experience as to these holidays, and their advice should be taken. Mr. Brooks op- posed the introducing of Christian festivals in the schools as such, and he would as soon add a Mahommedan holiday, but if the teachers and upils needed recreation he would give the: a Se Mr. Lioyd said that they may look for ratio from other parties if they make these jays holidays. Mr. Matthews remarked that they need not dodge the question, for if the schools are closed it will be because these days are church festivals, and they might as well grant the request, for public opinion fs against ie present rule, and, as is stated, if the schools are kept open, the attendance will be sinall. Mr. Wilson (supt.) said it was true public opinion 1s against the rule, and he explained that the sessions on Monday last year were of but little use, for on account of the great num- ber of absentees the work had to be gone over again. As for the Israelites, it been the custom when a note is sent setting forth ab- claimed that Easter Monday was regarded a3 a Secular holiday, and in old times all the colored ople expected Christmas and Whitsuntide as lidays. As for the jews they ought to be sat- isfled with their treatment in this country. Mr Holiana said he would not vote for the motion they are religious holidays, but, ir necessary, he would give another day for recre- ation, Mr. Smith favored the motion, is that these days should be observed as Christian levote them to the service of God.
