It was very gratifying to him to know that he had so many friends at Hillsdale; but he could not but think that he had been listening to his own funeralsermon. The Mutual Fire Insurance Co. THEE COURT CALLED ON TO DECIDE THE PENDING DISPUTE. Messrs. Merrick and Morris have for 3. C, Richards, G. B. Clark, Geo. J. Johnson, and J. Alfred Brockenbury, a messenger In the office of the District Commissioners, was arraigued on the charge of mesinne & public record from that office and selling ft for waste paper. a colored junk dealer testitied that he goteighteen pounds of waste paper from Brockenboroach and sold it to another man named Green and among the waste was this book. It was anold numerical book for 1803 and belonged to the assessor's Office. Green testified that be catled by there and took the old paper from defendant and paid him for it, putting it into his cart. Detective McElfresh testified to recovering tne book. which had been torn into shreds and the binding torn off. Mr. Frank Reeside, of the assessor’s office, testified that Mr. Doaie had told him to Rave this book repaired. Witness locked itup in his tase on Friday evening and Saturday when he went to get it it was miss- ing. He asked Brockenbury where it was and he replied that he had not seen it.
