Herald @fiice. 49 Avenue de i" ‘The Rights and Wrongs of the In- dians. ‘The breaking away of the Poncas from their reservation is a surprising event. These Ind!ans are submissive and peaceable, as wellas honest and intelligent, and have always hitherto held together as one man in obedience to the orders Of the government, however great the provoca- tion to an opposite course. The fact that they | have not in the past been driven to hostile de- i monstrations by the wrongs they have endured | makes ft somewhat remarkable that now, when the worst Is over and thelr condition ts improv- ing, any of the tribe should desert the reserva- tion. Even as itis, the number of runaways is | so smail (about one-thirtieth of the whole num- ber) that the Poncas will preserve as a tribe that reputation for patient endurance which the government has given them so many oppor- tunities of establishing. If there is any founda- tion for the remark that the only good Indian is a dead Indian, it consists in the fact that it is only the consideration of a life beyond the grave that offers temptations to become a good Indian. When the practice fs to impose upon Indlans in Proportion to their endurance, the bold, blus- tering, bad Indian has many advantages over the Christian Poncas, so far as this life is con- cerned. He ls treated with every consideration as long as he will consent to remain at peace. ‘The greatest wrong to the Poncas, from which Sprang the other evils that have come upon them, was the cesston to the Sioux of the land ‘Of the Poncas in Dakota. This cession and the hostility between the two tribes made neces- Sary the removal of the Poncas to Ind!an ter- ritory. A blunder of the government robbed them of their homes and property in Dakota, and the changed climate carried off many mem- bers of the tribe in Indian territory. But they are now on a healthy, fertile, well-watered res- ervation of thetr own selectionjand have become acclimated. If they are paid for their aban- doned northern homes and otherwise treated ‘with the consideration that they deserve, there maybe a better time coming for the Poneas. But it ts, perhaps, too much to expect that Con- gress will take the time to do justice to Indians ‘Who will not steal horses, murder settlers, and put the country to great expense to subdue them in case their claims are neglected, —__$__+++—_____. ‘The verdict of the jury in the Oliver-Cameron ‘lly approved; not that the pantie looks upon the defendant as altogether "but as holding him to be the vic- tim im the affair. The verdict is a wholesome move in the way of out women of the Oliver stripe from the National capital. ——_—$_<--___ Mr. Frye made an effective speech yesterday. The speeches of Mr. Chalmers, Mr. Carlisle and Mr. Hurd on the other side, were quite as able, but for all that they will not be printed by the million for circulation by the Gemocratic committee as the speeches of Gar- field and Frye will be by the republican mana- gers. The fact ts becoming daily more appa- rent that the republicans will manage to make considerably more campaign capital out of the extra session than will their opponents. —_——__-_____ Damages were recovered trom the Baltimore and Potomac railroad company for injuries sus- tained by J. The English labor troubles have driven many workmen from that count jarge Dumbers coming to the United States. The labor market, there, is consequently somewhat relieved.
