-THE EVENING STAR. WASHINGTON: ~ MONDAY...............March 31, 187% CROSBY S. NOYES... Editor. over fds, than iL Let Us — tify our Homes. Editor Erenis ‘Being an ardent aimirer Of horticulture in general, 1 perused your art! cle of last. week calling on the District of € lumbtia Horticultural Society to favor the public with exhibitions of fruits, flowers, &c., with in- terest. The lethargy which has so long pos- sessed us of the District In these matters, is now ‘Deing thrown off, and a hy aiden of improvement is rapidly gaining ground in our midst, and hor- meee and all its kindred arts, so long neg- re beginning to receive that considera- ton Which they so > justly deserve. Deeply im- pressed with the at inflluence whiten hort!- culture = = tates Lips oxerae ie =e e happiness as weil as the prosperity of mi I gratefully tender you my humbie tribute. of thanks for your valuable efforts io thelr behalf, and trust’ that you will not relax them unt! the object ts attained. If the members of this worthy society carry Out the objevt of their formation, we shall wit- ness a more refined taste excited, which wiil exhibit Itself in attachment to contented homes moral habits; ia discriminating betweea ‘beautiful plants and ordinary weeds; between choice frults and the meaner so between sbade trees and those of beautiful form3 And cleanly habits; between dwellings of mere kS and mortar, Dieak and desolate,—the numerous rre now sodiess and in many Cases the receptacles of the debris of the hoase- nold,—and those which show at once that they are the abodes of the re‘ined and the happy. They will thus contribute to the ultimate beauty. health, and happiness of our city, by ihe ciluvation of the trout. reservations of bur homes; by inducing a taste for rural arehitec- ture and decoration; by lmoroving our markets: apd even the public cemeteries, instead of being mereiy the cold, repulsive, and deserted abodes of the dead, shall invite us to their “paths of pleasautness and peace,” where sweet memories of the departed shail be mingied with the songs of birds and the perfumes of flowers. c. The above comes from a gentleman who has done much to promote a taste for horticulture in this District, and who has been Instrumental in tntreducing here many chotce varieties of flowers and plants. His remarks upon the de- sirabiiity of encouraging a refiaed taste that shall result in making the city homes beautiful and the city streets attractive, are to the potnt. No other city in the country has such oppor- tunities for tasteful adornments in the way of lawns, shrubberies, plants and flowers. Through the ‘king system of our streets, every man ‘the use, free of cost, of abund- ant ground in front of his house for these orna- mental purposes. At the same time as this ground thus liberally allotted to him ts pubite Property, it should be utilized for the adorn- ment of the city as well as the individual homes. The parking commission, or who- ever has the authority, should therefore exercise a supervision to ensure this taste- ful treatment of the parking, in a way not tomar the general appearance of the street. In a general way something like uniformity should be required. That is to say, on all ex- cept business streets, the sodding and the fence ne should be extended uniformly to the side- Walk. There should be no ragged edge, with the parking in front of some of the lots on a ‘Square sodded, and elsewhere paved; and there should be no unseemly gaps in the line of fenc- ing upon the parking. Of course, it is not re- quisite that the fencing should be all of one pattern or cost, but whether elaborate or plain. Costly or inexpensive, it should be carried along the parking front with continuity; and the sod- ding should be extended tothefence. Thesame Fule should be applied to the trees upon the “streets. The old and ugly trees, and trees out ‘Of line on the side-walks should be removed Without delay, and thrifty young ones of suita- Die kinds be planted. It is a mistake, anyway, to undertake to preserve old scrawny trees Merely because they have attained some size. Ithas been demonstrated all over the city that THE LABORATORY OF NATURE. IMPROVEMENTS.
