Witness had ex- amined the handwriting of all the letters at, his workshop by the use of apparatus devised for the purpose of testing handwriting. He had magnified the letters so as to occupy a space o fifteen square feet—_magnitying 300 times, The genuine Bristow letter ts written in a “prac- Uced but untrained wrist-hand, without tremu- Jousness;” the smal is always caaracterts- tie. as is the letter “y” and other letters whte he deseribed. The dispnied letters are written in an “unpracticed, untrained, irregular hand, and the whole character of the writing 1s that of tremutousness.” The capital I's of the Bristow letter are made with two trokes, those of the disputed letters with one troke; the “y's” of tie Bristow letter are all made without a Joop, but there are loops tosev- eral of the “y’s” in the disputed letters. Many other differences were pointed out. The words “My Dear Mrs. Oliver” are singularly cor- responding in the letters, and witness believes ‘suc! exact correspondence could be produced only by Sane one word over another. In the alleged alteration of the date ‘ptember 5” to “September 25,” the figure “2” is of ink of a difierent shade, evidently added. The paper of each letter was different, the color and water mark of the Bristow letter differing from that of the disputed letters, and the uwo disputed letters dl fering in water mark. Witness ts sat- isfied that the disputed letters were not written by the hand which wrote the Bristow letter. Cross-examined.—All the letters agree in be- ing written by untrained, wrist hands, with irregular curves. Witness does not think that Mr. Cameron could have so diszuized his writ- ing that witness could not have discovered the impression of his hand. The envelope. “free pass trom Washington to Cincinnati.” was shown witness, but he declined to make any comparison in the absence of his instruments. “MRS. OLIVER’S EVENINGS. Thomas R. Dwyer testified that in 1975 he kept a stationer’s store on C street, near Dela- wale avenue. The shanty corner of C street ard Delaware avenue had a bad reputation. Mrs. McDonald, an Irish woman, kept the house. Has seen Mrs. Oliver there several times in the evening. R. J. Marshall testified that he keeps the Marshall House here, and in 1875 kept Marshall Hall on tre Potomac, Mrs. Oliver came there in July, 1875, entered her name as from New Orleans, and said she was a widow. TO-DAY. A jam outside the bar, and a moderate at- tendance within, was the condition of the court reom this morning, on the opening of the case; but, as on the previous days, the crowd came in rapidly as soon as the trial begun. Besides Mrs. Oliver and Mrs. Henriques, there was but one other lady present. PROF. HAY AS AN EXPERT. Prof. E. B. Hay testified that be was an at- torney-at-law, and for thirteen years had given much attention to handwriting. He had exam- ined the letters, and said the Bristow letter showed decision of character and firmness in the writer: also, a uniformity of spacing, and the other letters the reverse. He then explain- ed the characteristics of the writing at length Means of a blackboard. He no- iced also a roughness in the c ig of the Us in the ber Sth letter, wulle in the other letter there was asmoothness. The words “My Dear Mrs. Oliver,” in the two letters, are exact in length, and in one letter appear to be traced in a tremulous hand. Had nodoubt that two of the letters were forgeries. B. Sweet appeared for James Madison ‘Wyatt Stone, the colored man cl with the murder of his wife in October last, and asked for continuance until May 5th. He read the affidavit on which the former continuance was granted by bars ey lie, which is to the effect that Stone was bornin Westbrook, Me., Nov. 12, 1844; that when eleven years old he was injured in the head by a knife in the hands of a com- panion, and had since been liabie to fits or terms of insanity. Dr. Wm. 0: » Of North Yar- mouth, Me., had attended him, and he with others living there were necessary to the de- ferse. The counsel said he had written to these witnesses, but was not able to obtain their at- tendance in time, adding, “I willstate, with a frankness scarcely, perhaps, consistent witi professional behavior, that there can be no doubt about the homicide, and our only defense will be a plea of insanity.” He had received two letters from his witnesses in Maine, con- taining a statement of what they would testify to. District Attorney Wells said he would prob- ably admit that the parties would swear to what was contained in the letters if counsel would let him read them. This the latter re- fused, remarking that he did not see, so long 23 the government had the custody of the prt- foner, why they manifested so much precipi- tancy, unless It was through a spasm of econo- my, and in that case they would have better have hanged him at the start. On the couct reid nee age motion Major Sweet requested the court to assign counsel, as he should with- draw from the case. SELECTING A JURY. This morning Mr. Sweet failed to appear, and after walting nearly an hour the court assigned Mr. A. K. Browne to defend Stone, and directed the trial to proceed. The court proceeded to select a jury. It has proved, indisputably, that the system of administering medicines internally a5 acure for disease is,as a rule, pernicious. Thou- sands upon thousands are dosed to death yearly, willing victims, from the mistaken opinion that na- ture calls for some powerful dose to be taken into the stomach before she can succeed in bringing about a healthy action, and thus enabie the various organs to perform their proper functions. It is a mark of progress and a matter of rejoicing that this remedy, which illustrates a principle as old as Hip Pocrates, is being so generally used and recom- mended. THE HOLMAN LIVER PAD COMPANY'S rem. | edies, which are the sole exponents of the OURE BY ABSORPTION a8 opposed to Dosina, have been Proved the cheapest and Most Kfectual Remedy for all Diseases Arising from Malaria or a Disordered Stomach or Liver, and it is a well-known fact that nearly all the diseases that attack the human body can be traced, directly or indirectly, to these two organs. The Pan exerts a Prompt and Specifie Influence upon the System, and, Removes the Poisonous Germs which Paralize its Action, and Restores a Normal Condition of Health ina Manner Absolutely Won- derful.
