THE EVENING STAR. WASHINGTON: TUESDAY.............. March 25, 1879. | CROSBY Ss. NOVES....Editors vorage Detly Circulation over 17,500-—being. @ much larger bons Ado, | foqular and permanent circulation than at of all the other daily cavers in the City added together. att SSS “The supine indifference which many Chris- tan ministers show to the inroads of skepticism upon religious faith” is the text of a lay ser- mon by the New York Sun. The divines are charged by that paper with pursuing the even tenor of their way, conducting a mecuantical worship, and preaching well-worn sermons on familiar themes, while their influence is de- clining and their congregations dwindling away, under the Insidious but steady progress ‘of modern scientific research. The Sua declares that unless effectual measures are takea “we shall pretty soon find ourselves in the condition of France and Germany, where churciies are maintained and pubile worship kept up with great pomp and solemnity, for the benefit Mainly of women and children, the waoie thing .belng regarded vy the men a3 un- worthy of the mascuilne intellect.” If | Mr. Dana will make around of inspection he | will find that even now the preponderance of | attendance at the churches of America as well | as of France and Germany, sof women and ebildren. Mrs. Frances Trollope in her book on the domestic manners of the Americans written many years ago asserted that two- thirds of the chureh-goers were women, and the proportion is at least equally large now. | j, While this non-atterdance of men may be | partly due to the growth of skepticism ft is quite likely that other causes are at work. Oae | of these, no doubt is the interminable spirit of Dickering and dissension indulged in by church | O-ganizations. It is probable that not a few men of sincere religious convictions have come to doubt whether the way to get to Heaven is by joining im an annual or semi-annual church 1 row, in which the whole congrezation get by the ears and every pew-holder is expected to take a lively part in the scrimmage. Most men find enough friction and worry in their basi- ness during the week without being called upon to take a hand In Sunday church wrang- log or electioneering, in which the charges Dandied about amongst the brethren of balot- box stuffing,—or rather pew-holder stufting,— and all sorts of returning board cheating rather surpass the most heated crimtnations and re- criminations cf the partizans in a close presi- dential election. It is just possible that if the church people would cultivate a more Christ’an spirit they would be more successful than now in impressing upon the world’s people the fact that their church edifices are the temples of God. rn ‘The opinion grows that the extra session wil! bea pretty long one. Even if general legisla- tion should not be entered upon there will quite certainly be a dead lock upon the points at issue tnat will take up considerable time, even if no result is reached. +++ —____ ‘The New York democracy are so torn up with internal dissensions that there 1s a loud call for Horatio Seymour to come to the front and resume the leadership. He has declared re- peatediy that he will not be a candidate for Office again, but it 1s held that he owes too much to the democratic party to refuse in such ‘an emergercy as this. —~<~--—_____. It is very dificult for two negotiators, wita conflicting ends in view, to compromise the question at issue without also compromising one of the negotiators. The republicans and democrats who would shorten the extra session and get home as soon as possible are now strag- gling with the problem above suggested. If ADASE MM. J. The results of each conces- ‘sion are in this case too well perceived to offer ‘the same chances of compromise a3 were pre- sented in the recent presidential complication. ‘There ts no good opportunity for the parties to toss pennies for the advantage, even ff they Were disposed to try again that method of escaping difficulties. The arrangement pro- posed by the democrats whereby two of the Points at issue are conceded them outright and ‘the third, in its essentials, is not likely to strike ‘the republicans as a satisfactory termination of @ struggle that has forced an extra session and has given the Senate offices to the democrats before the regular time. Such a compromise would be, substantially, a republican defeat. ‘The control of the Senate committee on elec- tion frauds having changed, the new chairman, Senator Wallace, seems inclined to change the Fapge of thecommittee’s guns and to bring them to bear upon the republican ranks.
