After the mass the clergy, preceded by the acolytes, proceeded to the site of the new con- vent, when the insert mS were read and ‘the stone blessed and laid with the usual cere- montes. The stone is from the Seneca quarries, three feet long and two feet wide. In the stone ‘was placed a sealed copper box, containing all the dally papers of the District and the Catholic Mirror, of Baltimore, and specimens of Amert- can coins of 1579. ‘The inscription on the stone is as follows: “In the name of the Blessed Trin- ity, and of the Blessed and Immaculate Virgin Mary, ard of Blessed Dominic, our founder. Erondo, | Oliver agt. Cameron. THE BREACH OF PROMISE CASE COMMENCED. To-day, at 12 o'clock, Chief Justice Cartter, in the Cireult Court, callea the case of Oliver agt. Cameron—the action brought. by Mr. M. S. Oll- yer ag!. Hon. Simon Cameron for breach of promise of marriage, alleged to have been made onthe 7th of December, 1875, for which $50,000 damages are claimed. Mr. Peter—who ape with Mr. Darnellleand Mr. Tonrv, of Kentacky. of ber counsel—said they were ready Mr. Cook, who is associated with Gen. Butler and Mr. Riddle for Mr. Cameron, sald !hat they were ready, and suggested that thoy would prefer a long panel. ‘Mr. Peter read from sth Gill and Johnson as to the mode of challenging a juror. Mr. Cook stggested that there was authority to challenge the whole array. The court asked what causes they proposed to challer ge for. Mr. Veter suggested that the terms of the statute may be complied with, and there was another question as to whether or not they had expresced an opinion on itie case. After some discussion, the court, at 12% oclock, took a recess, prior to swearing the jurors on their voir dire. During the recess Mis. Oliver, accompanied by Miss Chariton, eame in, and when the session was resumed, there was a crowded court rooin. Mr. Peter,'who had placed his motlon in writing, read It. ‘The court directed a juror to be called, and W. H. Diggs was called and the usual questions were answered. DARNEILLE OPENED THE CASE, briefly reciting that the case was for breach of ee of marriage on the part of the defe: lant. The facts out of which this cause arose run through several years, the acquatutance- ship commenced in isi2. He understood that in that year Mrs. Oliver came here to seek em- ployment. bearing letters to Mr. Cameron, wio seems to have known her father and also some- thing of her husband. Mr. Cameron secured her employment in the Treasury department and subsequently in the Interior department, The first year of their acquaintance (1573) thi proposition of marriage was mae, and they expected to prove that the forinal proposition Was made in 1875. The defendant having failed to come to time, she became nervous, and called on him several times, and while he never Atively refused, he never performed ft. inding herself thus mocked she commenced this action. They could not fully compensate the Injuries to a woundod heart, but they could give jamages, and after they’ had presented the case they expected the jury to fix the damages. « Gen. Butler.—We have no opening to make. The Court.—Call your witnesses. MRS. MARY E. OLIVER WAS CALLED, but before she was examined by the plaintif’s counsel, E Gen.
