Whatever may be thought of the gambling adjuncts of the walking business everybody will feel inclined to adi the pluck and man- liness dispiayed by the contestants in the New { York arena. Harriman in walking his last hun- dred miles, when so crippled as to be unable to move a leg without intense pain, afforded ev!- dence that the native American Is equal in the | quality of game endurance to the plucklest Englishman or Irishman. Ennis and Rowell, by the kind courtesies they extended to him to encourage him to make his 450 miles, made friends of every admirer of pluck and gen- erosity united. It is related among the incidents of the closing hours of the contest, that when Harriman staggered from his cottage door to enter upon his last ten mtles, Rowell, seeing how weak the Yankee was, and with evident admiration of the pluck he wa3 show- ing, took him by the hand, and then linking | arms with him, walked around the track, while everybody cheered Then Ennis came along and took Harriman’s other arm, and thus the two heroes leading in the race, generously en- couraged theirerippled but gallant brother to persevere in the effort to reach the 459th mile, though by his suecess they lost the large sum | they would have divided had he not come tn for third gate money. It 1s stated that at this | point a scene occurred that has not been , equalied. The kindly, magnanimous feeling | displayed by both the Englishman and the | Irish-American for Harriman, and their admira- tion of his pluck, was so considerately displayed “that more than one man found the tears roll- tng down his cheeks, and there was not a lady in the garden who did not cry amid their smiles and waving of handkerchiefs. From this time on until the finish, white there was at times much excitement, there was perfect good feel- ing displayed, and no one seemed to grudge the little Englishman the belt that he had so fairly won,” These walking matches have been compared in brutality to the cruel sports of the Roman arena; but such scenes as the above described Serve to show the difference between the pagan physicai contests and our own. In the Roman Colliseum the upturned thumbs of the blood- thirsty spectators constrained the victor to kill his prostrate adversary; in our arena an act of generous good feeling, like that displayed in ‘this case, is applauded to the echo, and brings tears of admiration to the eyes of strong men. So there are redeeming points after all about the walking business. Sr St. Patrick’s Day. As usual, the anniversary of Ireland’s patron Saint is a stormy day, and as usual the indom- itable sons of the Green Isle turn out in full force to celebrate the day, weather or no. The Procession to-day was not only large in num- bers, but made a notably fine appearance in uniform and in marching. The New Yorkers ‘Seem to find an annual fund of amusement in the tall hats and quaint costumes worn in the St. Patrick’s parade there, but the Irish-Ameri- cans of Washington, the Knights of St. Patrick, St. George. St. Joseph, St. Kolumbkille, St. chan St. Bernard, St. Stephen, &., and the Various Hibernian societies, all in their hand- some uniforms, or respectable black broad- cloth, certainly afforded no opportunity for anything but the most respectful comment. By the way, as St. Patrick was of Scotch birth, there seems no good reason why the Scotlans, as well as the Hiberntans. should not celebrate his anniversary. According to Butler’s “Lives of the Saints” St. Patrick was born in the last part of the fourth century in the town of Kilpatrick, onthe mouth [AwD CRABS, PUT UP AS CAUGHT, PICKED, AND READY FOR THE TABLE. marl7.3t N. When about sixteen years old he was taken captive by barbarians, who took him to Ireland, where he was obliged to keep cattle on the mountains and in the forests, in hunger and nakedness, amid snow, rainand ice. He had been in captivity about six months under one master when it was re- vealed to him in a dream that God desired him to return to Scotland and that a ship was ready to sailthither. Althouzh a long distance in the interior of the country he managed to reach the coast and found the ship. It was at home with his parents that “‘ God manifested to him by divers visions that he destined him for the great work of the conversion of Ireland.” He spent many years in preparation for the work he bad been called upon to do, and great opposition was made against his episcopal con- seeration both by his relations and the clergy. He, as he says himself, forsook his family, sold his birthright and dignity and persevered in nis resolution to preach the Gospel in Ireland, waere at this time the worship of idols generally ob- tained. In the firstyear of his mission he attempted to preach Christ in the gen- eral assembly of the kings and states of all Ireland, held yearly at Taraghs or Themoria, in East Meath, the resi- dence of the chief king, styled the monarch of the whole island, and the principal seat of the ruid priests. The son of Neill, the chief mon- areh, declared himself against the preacher. Nevertheless he converted several, and on his road to that place the father of St. Benan or Benignus, his immediate successor in the See of Armagh. He afterward converted and bap- tied the kings of Dublin and Munster, and the seven sons of the king of Connaught, with the greatest part of their subjects, 2nd before his death he had baptized almost all the inhabit- apts of the island. He founded a monastery at Armagh, another called Domnach Padraig, or Patrick’s church, and filled the country with eburches and institutions of piety and learn- ing. He died and was buried at Down, in Uister, where his body was found in a church of his name in 11-5. 2+ “Suffering Teacher” has something to say | elsewhere in answer to “Suffering Parent. Probably both are right after all. Nobody | doubts that the teacher ts hardly workea, but it does not follow that the pupils should therefore be loaded down with tasks outside of school hours, or that the parents should be required to act as teachers in addition to their other duties. The proper solution of the difficulty would seem to be to put a little curb upon the emulation between the different schools and Sub-districts as to which shall do the most cramming, and lighten the tasks put upon the pupils so that they shall not be assigned more than they can perform in the ordinary school hours. ———— It will be agreeable information to the public to know that the city railroad companies have virtually agreed upon the terms of an in- terchange of tickets, and the interchange will be entered upon to-day upon most if not all the roads. The only difficulty about carrying the arrangement fully into effect is in conse- quence of the tickets on the Metropolitan and Belt lines being tov thick w be punched by the bell-punch used on the Washington and George- town line. The adoption by the latter of trip- ‘slips, or by the former lines of thinner tickets, will obviate the trouble, and then the public can enter upon the full enjoyment of the con- venience of interchangeable tickets, good on every read. No doubt the roads will benefit by — ‘ting the public, by the increase of vel —— ‘Theres a certain degree of uncert: alaty about the Speakership yet, but in the opinion of cool observers Randail’s chances are still the best. —--____ “at, @ St. Louls paper, derives | the fact that O'Leary is CE!
