It is almost convincing to listen to him. He arose yesterday at 2:11:07, after less than three hours’ Sound sleep. and, except for a few unimportant stops, kept up his machine-like plod all day. He eats and drinks with relish, aad his physt- clan says he tn better condition, if that were possible, than when he started.’ His outward appearance certainly gives no indication of any change. The ‘sympathy of the ssemblage is’ evidently with bim. Be- ing the only American in the race. he was the favorlte with all native-born citizens from the start, and now that O'Leary's cuances have waned, his superior performance has com- menécd him to the best wishes of all others who do not wish to see the caampton belt leave these shores, All four contestants are in receipt of stich a profusion of elegant floral offerings that their cottages resemble zreen-houses, bat Ilarriinan’s are more numerous and more ele- Sunt than all the others put together. Half the e during the afternoon he was carrying a basket or a bouquet of Mowers with him around the back. He appears to have a special spite against Rowell, probably because of the latter's position tn the race, and in his efforts to break the Englishman down he has the ready asalst- ance of Ennis, who will be spoken of further on. It was curious to watch the ta: two and the successful manner fa which they worried Rowell. Despite all Rowell could do Harriman kept within ten miles of him all Aes Occasionally the record would be allowed to exceed that a mile or two, and Rowell, lulled into fancy security, would dart Into his cottage to rest his sore | Harrtman would then let himseif out, and fore the as- tonished oe could realize the fact the gap would closed, and his trainers would uurry him out on the track again to prevent further damage. Harriman would keep up his tremendous stride, forcing Itoweli to break into a trot to keep up with him, and then Eanis would eome re aud being a better runner than Rowell, Would dart alongside of him stimutating into further exertion. This little game would be continued for hours. Rowell never Seemed to be able to see through the litte ar- rangement which was surely using up. During the afternoon Harriman let Rowell in- crease his lead to 14 miles, but when the Eng- lishman retired for his long rest he kept right along, and before he returned to the track reduced the difference toa paltry 5 miles. He ener 150th mile at 2:44:35 o'clock, and his at 9:05: O'LEARY’S FREQUENT ABSENCES FROM THE TRACK. The N.Y. Now, however, he is driven as he never was before, and his? dissipation is telling on him. His stomach refuses food, and several times during the last twenty-four hours he has abso- lutely refused to go on the track until supplied, sometimes with champagne, and at other times with brandy. At noon yesterday he ate some oatmeal Crackers, and that was the first food tbat remained on his stomach for many hours. Some of his friends are dep and many are Ci hedging their bets, bat on the other hand, he has staunch admirers who believe that he will rally and yet reach the front. SCENES DURING THE WALK. The N. Y. Syn says:—When one of them put on a spurt and went ahead of another the spec- tators cheered, and the throng on the floor surged from side to side to catch fair views of the contestants as they went spinning round the track. All of the walkers kept well ia to- ward the short inner side of the track. Rowell Still adhered to the method of walking close on the heels of O'Leary. The contrast between tbe two walkers was striking. The champion strode ahead with the gait that a perfect wali- ing mschine might be expected to nave, looking on he:tier side, while the little man from across the water skiinmed over the sawdust wita a tight step, swinging his hands in front of him trom side to side in time with his step. Eanis runs like a farmer trying to get ahead of a faga- clous cow. O'Leary ome juickens his pace, and runs with a suggestion of that_mechanteai ent that characterizes his walking. Karly in the afternoon, justas Rowell was nearing the end of his 157th mile, as usual almost under the Sweep of O’Leary’s elbows, Harriman came up with a brisk stride, took ‘the outside and at- tempted to peer The young Englishman hauled out of the champion’s shadow, and he and the Yankee had a close brush for more than a lap. Harriman sped rapidly over the sawdust, and Rowell skipped along in the liveliest manner. ‘The spectators appreciated the exhibition and yelled with delight. Rowell fell into a trot, and continued it for a mileor more. All = the afternoon such episodes and others on the sawdust calied out frequent bursts of applause and encouraging shouts from interested specta- tors to their favorites. Gen. Sickles was at the reporters’ stand a few minutes yesterday, and especially admired Rowell's style, and in the evening Sir Edward Thornton and suite visited Rowell in his cot- tage. A_Dveck-Hunter’s EXPEDIENTS.—Goose Rock, in East Lyme waters, is a favorable resort of black duck. During the season Edward C. Luge, of Lyme, has shot two hundred of these fowls, and he kas also tured four hair seals. He conducts his sporting campaign in a hut built upon the rock tn a manner to represent nature as closely as possible. A stove and other ordi- nary cokventences furnish the hut, and from a loop-hole facing the water he watches the birds. When a flock settles within gun-shot he blazes away with both barrels. One lucky shot brought down eighteen duck. A trained water Spaniel 1s his companion in the hut, and he 1s sent after (he birds. The Gazette says the discover of this paper after the lapse of nearly 20 years, during wi time a great lawsuit over the property thereby disposed of has beea instituted abd ended adversely to the above-named ladies, has excited a great deal of interest in Uhat ccunty. As no will could be found after Davia Crauturd’s death, although it was claimed he had made one, suit was instituted by the children of his deceased brother, Thomas Craufurd, who clatmed that Thos.
