EXEMPTION FROM TAXATION OF PROPERTY USED FOR EDUCATIONAL PURPOSES. In reply to a communication from the Sisters of the Visitation, through their attorneys, Messrs. Commissioners, states:—“Property to be exempt must be actually used for educational purposes, “no matter what it was purchased for, nor how Jong it takes: ce, are it, itcannot be exempted till it is ‘used.’ That fs the language of the law. I hold that property purchased for educa- tonal purposes is to taxed till actually used for that purpose; and this use does not in till scholars are in the occupancy of it under their teachers, and are receiving their education in or on it.” A DELEGATION of the trustees of the College of Pharmacy waited on the District Commissioners to-day in relation to the appointment of a commissioner to fill the place made vacant by the death of Dr. J. C. Riley, stating that the claims of the National University had not been recognized tn the recent appointment, and another point of objection was that the new appolatee, Dr. Ward. is registered a8 a pharmacist on the books of the National College of Pharmacy, and that a physician should be appointed to till this va- cancy, and not a pharmacist. It may be that under the circumstances Dr. Ward will decline to qualify, as the technical objection has been raised by the College of Pharmacy. The law requires the board to be made up of three phar- macists and two physicians, OFFICIAL INSPECTION OF THE NEW TRUCK HOUSE ON CAPITOL BILL. This morning In the Probate Court, Judze Wy- lie answered the question in the case of the pe- tition of Mrs. Lamb, guardian to Nina Simp- Son, nee Tipton. ‘This case was noticed 1 THs STAR of yesterday, Mrs. Lamb, as guardian, and Miss Simpson, having petitioned for a clos. ing of the guardian’s accounts. The question Was raised that under the Maryland law a girl attains majority at 18 years, and when a girl marries the guardian must close the account, and the counsel (Messrs. Findley, of Baltimore, and Gordon, of ‘town,) filed an exhaus- uve brief on the subject. Judge Wylie desided that a girl must be twenty-one re she at- tains her majority under the act of Congress of 1846, relating to and the ty. | In this case, the maid’s lan had beeu appointed, and her estate being separate the guardianship must continue until she arrives at of twenty-one. Missinc Women.—The finding of a young woman's body ased in a trunk ‘in a Warsh near Lynn has been followed by una- vailing search fora clue to her identity. As in the case of the woman’s body found n'a bar- vel on Staten Island a few months ago the revelations of the inquiry are almost as inter- esting as the tragedy itself. Not leas than a score of young women answering the victim's description are reported missing by reiatives, who almost fear to look upon the body lest it be recognized as that of the absent one. Some have disappeared after starting on an errand or to meke a visit; others have runaway from home; one had been driven out, and was sougat Ls &@ parent who was only too anxious to for- give and forget. The thought of death haa in every instance softened all hard feelings to- ward the missing. The inquiry reveals many secrets carefully kept untilnow.
