Love us? Certainly they loved us, bat what ood did that do us? Theirs was ‘not a wise love, and when we needed the wisdom of love we gol it not either for our guidance or our com fort. And some of us would be better now our- selves and have less to regret had our parents been wiser. {Golgen Rule. Is QUEEN VICTORIA A SPIRITUALIST?—It is re. port that the Queen has enrolled herse among the spirituallsts or spiritists, as some of them are beginning to call themselves, as a term more etymologically correct than the older name. Her Majesty’s lately-deceased bosom friend, Mme. Van der Weyer, was a be- liever in the “occult science,” and was great at ese a seances at her residence, the New Windsor, and invoking the ghosts of Mons. Sylvain, Van der Weyer and others of ler quondam mundane aequatutanee . OF course, to the Anglo-Belgian lady it was open to belong to any sect—ts spiritualism accounted asect, by the by?—she chose; but even the law of “Protestant succession” will permit the royal ily to hold any creed short of that of Roman €atholicism; therefore, the Queen’s profession of spiritualism, however much it may “go against the grain” with that sturdy chur ‘chman, the Archbishop of Canterbury, the rationalisti¢ Dean of Westminster, or that stoutly evangell- cal newspaper called the Rock, is scarcely likeiy to lead to trouble. Spiritualism seems to be rather fashionable among crowned or once- crowned heads. At the Tuileries, while the second empire was in power, one heard of tt frequently, and the Russian and sundry other royal houses have looked with an eye of favor upon it.—{London Cor. San Francisco Chron, “A TERRIBLE TEMPTATION.”—Charley Rau, of No. 111 Bushwick avenue, Brooklyn, married his wife a year ago and she presented him with a baby a few dayssince. It was reported that Mrs. Malone, Charley's mother-in-law, had taken the child out to exbibit the day after it Was born, and that imbibing too freely she had left the child on a stoop. This story proved un- true, and it now appears that the father was alone responsible for the loss of the child, which since then has been adopted by a Mrs. Heidman, of No. 118 Hopkins street. Every ef- fort to regain the child from tts adopted mother has proved unavailing. Mrs. Heidman is fond of babies and having received this one from the commissioners of charities, determined not to part with it; besides this she had passed it off on her husband as their joint property. On the day she received it and about the time she ex- pected her husband's return from work she took to her bed and appeared to be sutferin from confinement and then called her husban over to kiss the child and its mother. The fond husband was naturally overjoyed, but when the child was claimed by its father the ruse of Mrs. Heidman was exposed. As affairs stand at present in relation to the matter it has been arranged that Mrs. Heidman shall retain the child.—{. Star, October 29.
