In another columr will be found a communt- cation from a well posted source throwing ad- @itional light on the vexed question of our river front. Nothing more nearly concerns the future of Washington than the solution of the problems Involved in this subject, in its various bearings ‘on the national capital, and everything leading 4n that direction deserves attention. While there may be differences of opinion as to the causes and also, perhaps, as to the extent and probable effect of the deplorable condition of things at present existing in that locality, there S to the necessity for remedy. That our city ese: the last summer from a fatal epidemic having Ats origin in this hot-bed of poison and death is no guarantee of like immunity in future, and unless the cause be removed in the meantime the very worst results may be expected another Season. It is therefore the duty alike of official authorities and private citizens to Step possible toward abating the nuisance at the earliest moment and in the most eff ner conceivable. Not only the w perity but the public health of the city isat Stake. With such Issues invoived there can be no excuse for delay in any quarter. ee —— In view of the failure of cipher dispatches to Yetain their secrets, the curieus are making in- ations to determine how the ancieats ried on ndence not Intended for the 1 the letter ten and then covered with wax were Epistles were sent in the stomachs of dead & Histiaeus in Persia sent a communication to Aristagoras in Greece, on the subject of inciting to revolt against the Persian overt ment, Ina curious w He shaved the head of one of his servants, impressed his secret Message on a smooth, bald spot, and when the hair had grown again sent him off to Greece. A Second shaving enabled this animated cipher dispatch to perform his errand. Tie servant knew nothing of the message which he was car- rying. being led to believe that the first shaving, the rough treatment of his head, and the final Shaving were steps in his cure from a disease of the eyes. - ‘The mining regions have so far recovered from ‘the depressing effects of the last ;anie as to be preparing for another one. There is no change for the better in the craze for the mining specu- Jation that has s2ized the Pacifie coast. All Stocks, good and bad, are rising in value, and fortunes are made at every turn. Soon these ‘newly-made millionaires will be punctured and collapse. Activity in mining operations, caused ‘by the flowing in of capital from Europe and the east, will be of benefit where it encour- ages the legitimate and skiliful working of mines that have a real value. But the mining indus- try will not be permanentiy benefitted by the Teckless outlay of capital upon unprofitable amines, which is a feature of such whirls of ex- citement. And ghe gambling in stocks that now Hourished is sure to be injurious in its conse- aqvences. ——_—__-+-_______ ‘The recent finding «{ a1 indictment agains the Rev. Mr. Hayden in the Stannard mur- der case will no doubt bring to pass one of the most curious trials that has ever attract Public interest. When the murdered woman ‘Was discovered she bore all the marks of having Met a violent death. In the examination which ended in the acquittal of Mr. Hayden, who had ‘been suspected of the crime, he incidentally Mmendioned that on the day of the murder he had bought arsenic to poison rats, and that he had placed the package unbroken on a beam in the barn. As the girl seemed to have been killed by violence and not by poison. no atten- tion was paid to this circumstance, and the prisoner was set free. But enormous quantities Of arsenic have since been discovered in the Stomach of the dead girl, and Mr. Hayden's re- arrest has been followed by his indictment. The whole trial will turn on the broken or unbroken Condition of that package of arsenic. ~ The report of the American iron and stee1 association for 1Si7 shows that no manufac- turing business has suffered greater depression than the important industries of which it treats, Only 270, or less than half of the blast furnaces Of the country were in operation at the close of the year, in spite of the increasing demand for Bessemer steel rails. The impossibility of ob- taining paying prices for thelr products, by Yeason of the slight demand, was the cause of the numerous failures and suspensions. Manv- facturers who have merely suspended opera- tions have of course done as well as those who have kept their furnaces at full bast without making any profit; and when the trade revives they will again enter the fi Though the Yeport gives an unfavorable showing for the present, it is hopeful for the future. Importa- tion of iron and steel has stopped. Tn the item teel rails, 12 tons have come from abroad in iZainst 400,456 tons in | The demand for tron and steel has been greater in the last Year than in 1876, and the association is encour- aged to think that with the revival of business the demand for tron in this country and in Europe will give active employment to all the furnaces of the country, and that our facilities for its mining, manufacture and transportation will make us Ue great iron-producing country Of the world. = Those of the Iowa democrats who conceived the idea of hoiding Congressional eiections next month on the ground that November and not October is the legal time, have prudentiyde- cided to take no further steps in that direction. ‘There is no reasonable doubt as to the legality of the October elections; and it is far from certain that the democrats and greeabackers would even hold the two districts Ta the have won, in case the republicans should w& the challenge to a new contest ——_—__-+ Kansas having made a leulation which estimates her wheat crop at th liloa dot- lars in value is training for the grain-growing championship among the states. California thinks of the 175,156 tons already s ed from her port, as the showing for merely the first Quarter, and does not shrink from the fray. —_——____ +<- —_ rt AS the prospects that the German aatt-social- Astic bil will pass become greater and greater, itis worth while to remember that in case it Is Bnally carried we are promised a wholesale em igration of socialists to this couatry. If it is not permissible to say that this change will put the Socialists where they wil do the most good, it may, at least, be said that the transfer will le- cate them where they will do the least harm. Socialistic opinions are like some cases that. ave Geadly when confined in close quarters, but are comparatively harmless when allowed tree vent and permitted to mingle with the atmosphere, ———— "The panic yesterday with its resulting deaths 4m a Lynchburg colored church impresses the Jessons of the Liverpool disaster. If men and Women will not keep cool in times of apparent qanger, and if it is impossible to provide sufti- cient means of exit for a desperate, struggling crowd, it ts hard to see how these accid snts are to be prevented.
