Herald A New Dress.—What it Means. Ifany evidence were needed as to the wide Circulation of THe Star and the high rate at which its machinery is required to be driven in order to place its large and constantly increas- Ang editions before the public, it is abundantly furnished in the fact that it ts found necessary to renew all the material with which it Is printed in less than eleven months since it ap- peared in its last newdress. It is easy for newspapers to claim a wide circulation, but few are able to produce such convincing proof in Support of their assertions as Tae Star pre- sents to-dey. —This much it seems proper to say in con- nection with the new dress in which this issue of the payer appears,—not in a spirit of boast- fulness, but rather a thankful acknowledge- generous patronage It receives from the people of Washington, and as an earn- est also that it will is Keep pace in tm- ements and enterprise with the liberal sup- ~nded to it. In other words, no effort Or expense will be spared to 1 THe Star continually worthy the reputation it has so Tong and so universally enjoyed.—that of being the most widely read newspaper and the best advertising medium in the District of Columbia. ————~+--—___. Mr. Representative Potter will please take notice that if he wishes to save his committee and rom the contempt of the whole le, without regard to party, he must promptly and thoroughly investigate the cipher ¢ ms in the Florida election case, as iated and published by the New York Tri- tyne. Nothing less than this will satisfy public opinion. ‘The entire history of corruption in politics can show nothing equal to the depths Feached in that matter, and unless Mr. Potter and his colaborers probe it to the very bottom try will accept it as confessed that wanted was not to uncover fraud and expose the guilty, but to make party capt- tal. This is now out of the question. The best at ean be done, therefore, even from Mr. Potter's partisan point of view, is to vigor- ously expose the whole gang engaged in the disgraceful business, no matter who may be hurt. As for Mr. Tilden and those acting in his interest. they are past saving, no matter what may be done or left undone. ———___—__<+= The republican investigating committee find Acklen Innocent; the democratic committee, who were to advise him to withdraw from the democratic congressional ticket in case they found him guilty, have advised him to with- draw. This isa queer reversal of the ordinary findings of partisan investigating committees. If Acklen concludes to run for Congress in spite of the action of his party brethren, he should make the race as the republican nominee. His Vindieators would naturally be the ones to support bim. 'S, so According to the figures of a school census re- cently taken in Chicago that city now assumes @ population of 436,731. This is considerably Jess than she has been in the habit of claiming, and yet more than she has usually been given credit for, particularly by her rivals. The figures of a school census are not always relia- ble bases for estimates, but it fs likely that in this case the assumption is not very far out of the way,—not farther, at least, than is justified by the rules of the usual game of brag be- tween western cities. A census of St. Louis is now in order. ——_—_~---_______ It seems that it is yet too early to congratu- Jate the financial and business world that the shock of the great Glasgow failure has been met and successfully resisted. The uneasiness and depression in Great Britain finds voice in the London Times, which appeals to the busi- ness community not to precipitate an impend- ing panic by losing self-control in the crisis. It may be that the alarms on this head are fos- tered by certain speculators in stocks for in- terested purposes. But it is none the less evi- dent that Great Britain, long suffering under unfavorable conditions of trade and industry, is not prepared to submit her firms and other in- stitutions to a searching test for weak places; and such examination, asa result of the Glas- gow collapse, seems inevitable. It is to be hoped both for Great: Britain’ and for our own sake that the panic, of which there seems to be a disagreeable prospect, may be avoided. ee There is excellent authority for the opinion that nothing ts so concillating with young per- Sons as a little severity. ‘The police authorities would not go amiss by acting on this principte to the extent of dispersing the bands of boys armed with bean-shooters, slings and similar Weapons, Who kill the birds of the city, break exposed glass. and endanger the eyes of those in range of their missiles. This ts not a crying evil, unless, to be sure, it is a child that becomes the involuntary target; but one needs only to be struck by one of the stones used as missiles, projected by means of a broad rubber band, to become thoroughly convinced that the matter ig one which requires attention. ——_—_—_--_____ ‘The two lessons which the catastrophe at the Coliseum theater in Liverpool teaches have been impressed by a hundred simila® accidents, suf. Ticlent means of exit to accommodate, as far as as possible, even a panic stricken crowd should be provided by theater managers. On occasipns of such excitement and alarm the persons con- Stituting the audience should endeavor to pre- serve that control over themselves which men, @8 distinguished from brutes, are supposed to have the power to display. But experience also teaches a lesson; namely, that in cases of this kind the majority of an audience always does lose its head, and those who try to keep cool are carried away in the rush for the exit; and sec- endly that in such desperate struggles for the outside of the building the completest arrange- ments for exit will only diminish and not en- Urely prevent wounds and loss of life. ——— AY's: M PARIS KID GLOVE DEPOT, 929 nsyleania avenue, (One Door East of Mitchell & Marun‘s.)
