October S, 1878, TRE SurcipE OF DR PETERMANN, THE GERMAN GEOGRAPHER.—A Bertin dispatch to the New York Herald confirms the report that Dr. August Heinrich Peterman, the dist: gulshed German geographer, did not die from an apopiectic stroke, a3 was at first reported, but committed suicide, being drivea to dis- traction by bodily suffering, caused by bron chitis and mental excitement of a domestic nature. According to the Herald’s dispatch, on the morning of the 2th ultimo Dr. Peter: man, after a restiess night, requested his wife and daughters, who had’ tenderly watched over him during the night, to retire from the Toom, which they did. They did not remain absent long—searcely fifteen minutes, wien, en their return, Dr. Peterman was found harging limp and lifeless from the window. To a reporter of the News, however, the other day, he said: I don’t exactly know just yet whether I will be a candidate for Congress before the republican convention or not. A STRATAGEM IN HoLMAN’s INTEREST.—A special dispatch to the Cincinnati Gazette from Liberty, Ind., October 4, says: A rumor has just reached ‘here that “Chan.” Jeffries, the greenback candidate for Congress in this district, has withdrawn in favor of Holman, the democratic candidate. Jeffries left Rich: mond very suddenly last night, and it is prob- able he is now in the back country arranginu: matters. This movement has been antici: pated for some time past. Upon the heels of this report came the “watch dog,” Holman, inte town, and he is, at the present writing, closeted with the democratic moguls, arrang- ing. doubtless, for the consummation of the scheme. Holman came from near Richmond, itis supposed. He travels in a buggy alone. Union county has but about 25 greenbackers of republican antecedents, while quite a num- ber of democrats will vote for Browne this year from personal choice.
