The starting was delayed until about fifteen minutes before 11 o'clock, owing to the time consumed in fitting the armor to the riders, which was done at the National Hotel, and even at the hour named eniy eighteen of the Knights were in line, but they were joined by the other twelve before they had proceeded far, making thirty a’to- gether, the full complement, who entered the contest. Twenty mounted policemen, under Lieut. Johnson, preceeded the line. Next came the marine band, twenty pieces, in Knox's transfer express car, drawn by six horses in uniform trappings. Next came Chief Marshal J. O. P. Burnside and his aids, mount- ed on bandsome horses, the first named with searlet sash, and the aids with white sashes and batons. Following came the Knights, in fu)l costume and armor, with helmets tipped with different colored feathers, and lances, forming altogether a very gay and attractive spectacle. ae the Knights came the general committee in barouches. The staré was witne:sed by an admiring crowd of :.ev- eral thousands. The line was up Sth street and through the streets heretofore pubiished. The weather being fair, the air clear and brac ing, and the dust of the streets aud county Toads effeciually laid by the rain of yesterday, everything betokencd a periect success for the tournament, the preparations and outlay exceeding anything of the kind ever witnessed in this District, and certainly reflecting eredit on the management, avd on Mr. Hill, who has generously tendered the free use of his driy- ing course and properties connected with it. Mr. J. L. Barbour and other members of the committee were busy supervising the parade, and were early on the ground to-day to see that the pregramme is faithfully carried out, and that the patrons of the tournament have the opporiunity to fully enjoy the festivities. The first train for the tournament left the B. and P. depot, on (th street, at fifteen minutes before 12 e’clock—eight ears all full, and an- other train was pub in position at onee, and d. A. R. Shepierd:—While every effort is being made to send money south to relieve suffering, there seems to me to be danger that much greater suilering may be left, without care or belp, amongst our home people. I see that just at a time when most needed, the Commissioners for the District have sus- pended any further assistance to the sick poor of the District. I am satisfied that there is to- day hundreds of families now in the city who were Well to do but a few years ago that are now suffering for the most common recessa- ries of life, and by your process of raising money for the yellow fever people of the south, you squeeze the lemon, side, cross ways and lengihwise, in churches, in off departments, in the theaters, on the course—in fact, everywhere, and liave made the begging so universal that nothiug, I fear, is left for the suffering poor of the District, while every indication now points to a winter of suffering and distress to all but the rich and office-holder. It seems to me that a little, if ever so little, juice should be leftin the lemon for our home suffering and home poor. On motion of Mr. Wolf a resolutioa was adopted: “That while the committee recog. nizes the force of this letter, yet they are con- Strained to say that no power or authority is yested in them to alleviate the wants of our District poor. Whenever such auviority is conferred they will not shrink from the re sponsibility or labor.” The School Board. STANDING COMMITTEES APPOINTED, Mr. W. W.
