ASHINGTON: September 23, 1878. CROSBY 8. HOYES. ‘Teo Travelers and Hesidents Abroad. THE EvErxiIne (ce = Let ee on a aghr following places, wher lvertisermen' subecriptinns wlll be Tecelved:— Henry F. ats & Charing Cross, London: Chaz! ta, and N. ¥. ‘Paris. oe i Me i L g § Ey i a l it FA 5 I | 2 ' reg ‘The action of the authorities in prohibiting in future any more Cohen processions and mass meetings is a thing to be thankful for; but, ail the same, the question arises—If there was ro law for this acticn in the beginning, how comes it that there is law for it now? and if there has been law for it all along, why was the action Hot taken long ago? Three of the nominees on the Butler dem-- cratic ticket have withdrawn. If matters co on in this way Butler will soon be left in soli- tary grandeur—absorbing the whole ticket in himself. He no doubt feeis able to “paddle his own canoe,” and will not be disheartened because his chosen co workers have deserted theiroars. But when so large a proportion of a ticket declines to run, the suspicion inevita- bly arises that the deserters have good reacon to doubt that those whom they abandon are marching to victory. ‘Tfie publication of banns in a modified form has been revived by Bishop McNierny, of Albany, 2s a safeguard against secre’, run- away or hasty marriages. The evils resuiting from a majority of such marriages do not need to be pointed out, and Bishop MeNierny has determined that the responsibility for them shall: ot rest on the priests in his dic- _ see Those who desire a reciprocity treaty with Canada ard the ultimate annexation of the Dominion to the United States find that they can derive a certain comfort from the protec- tonist victory in Canada. The theory is that when a retaliatory policy is put in operation against the United States, the Canadians, be- ing deprived of the use of our canals, will be put at such disadvantage commercialiy that a strong reaction will {’ low in favor of recipro- eity which will carry the nation much farther in this direction than any point previously reached. The snubbing of the free-trade policy of England is also considered as a sign that the sympathy between the mother country and colony, which would stand in the way of annexation by us, is weakening. Indeed, those whose plans are to a greater or less de- gree defeated by the recent Canadian elec- tion seem to derive rather more pleasure from the victory of the protectionists than the Protectionists themselves. ——___-+.--__ Some of Cohen's men are getting tired of being misrepresented. One of them, known as ‘‘Italian Joe,” finds fault with the press for calling him a “recent jail bird,” whereas he claims that he has not been in the penitentiary for four years last past. These reckless Yeporters ought to be more precise in their statements, and not wound the feelings of gentlemen in this rude way. + Talk about shrinkage in real estate in Washington! It is not unreasonable to Suppose that the grand jury were moved by this impressive petition and that they would have considered themselves false to the juror’s oath if they had not used every means in their power to avert these frightful effects of the elevated railway. While they were making up their minds on the matter, with all the de- Mberation that is becoming ina grand jury when interests of such importance are ia- volved, the managers of the elevated road Were preparing a surprise for them. The co- horts of the elevated road were drilled in secret and an arsenal of deadly weapons ac- ‘cumulated. So that the battle last week before the grand jury resulted in the completa rout of the opposing forces. First the representa- tives of the road showed by witnesses the efforts they had made to lessen the noise and to arrest sparks, and cinders, and the partial success of these endeavors. Edison was produced with his phonautograph and expressed the opinion that the noise could be reduced one-half. Then came the sensation. It had been as- serted that no physician could be found to say that the road was not injurious to health. The grand jury were presented with three moas- ter petitions signed by more than two hun- dred physicians and surgeons, representing nearly every medical institution in the city, not only denying that the road was injurious, ‘Dut asserting that it was a positive benefit to the public health by relieving the crowded and unhealthful tenements of the lower sec- tion of the city as a result of opeaing up cheap homes where the ground {3 high and the conditions of living are more conducive tohealth.
