A rather queer story is told and can be vouched for by over a dozen persons in Spring- field. It ere about three years ago a oupg man living in Summit got married, and in due time his wife gave birth to a child, which was a girl. When the child was about one lege old its mother died. About five 8 later the young widower became peg fe took unto himself another wife. efore doing so he took all of his first wile’s clothing, packed it in a trunk, locked it up, and allowed no one to have charge of the key but himself. Among the clothing put away was her wedding shawl and a pillow his wife had made for her first-born, and also Sime loys she had bought just before she died. Then he brought home wife No. 2. who, it is said. made as good a mother as the average step-mo'hers do. Things went oa lively til! ove night last week, when there was & party at the next neighbor's house. So after alter putting the babe in its little bed, the father an, . 2 went over to spnd the evening ai the party. Shortly after they left, two men came along on their way t) the party slo. They saw a woaderful Ight in the house as though it might be cn fire. They also heard the cri babe as though in great pain. They went to the house, and as scon as they reached door the light went out and ail was as silent as the grave within. They hastened on to the house where the party was and told the man What they had seen and heard in his house as they canie hy. Five or six men, including the owner of the house, started to inves’ report. When they arri they found e door and window fast, as they were when the owner left. On going inside everything was found to be in its place, except the child, Which, after a long search, was found up Stairs under the bed on which its mother died. covered up in its mother’s wedding shawl, aid its little head resting on the pillow its mother made for it, fast asi Alongside of it lay its little playthings. examining the trunk it Wes fyund to be locked and nothing missing except the above mentioned articles. Now, how the things got out of the trunk and the key in the owner's pocket, and he half a mile from it, and how the child got up stairs, is a meters The above may sound a little dime- novelish, but, as we said before, the facts in the case ‘can be aud are vouched for by over a dozen reliable citizens of Springtield.—[ Hliza- of the beth (N. J.) Herald, A MUTUAL SURPRISE—A young married man of this city, married long enough to be able proudly to say to his friends and credi- tors, “I am a father!” came to theconclusion a week ago, aided and assisted by his better half, that their joint happiness would not be complete until they had visited the youn; man’s parents, and gratified grandpapa an: — with the evidence that there was 6 in the old land yet. The young man’s parents reside in one of the lower coast parishes. The visit to them was designed as @ sui prise, and the journey wasso arranged, When the sy. trio arrived ‘at their destina- tiop, and their advent beneath the paternal porch was announced, a surprise was the resuit, but it was not as designed velo ‘The old mar, afraia of the fever, peremptorily retused to receive his son and heir, or the son and heir's wife,or the wife's heir. Further- more, he peremptorily ordered them off his premises, and, despite all remonstrances, they were compelled to obey his orders. They passed seyeral hours on the levee, without shelter, very uncomfortably, as may be imag- ined, aud returned to the city by the first boat, deeply chagrined. The infant son and heir, however, cares nothing for this strange epi- sode ; he takes his rations regularly and sleeps as soundly as if his grandpa had presented him with a silver pap-bowl. CaLIFORNIA’s Wom Lawyer.—The bill ening women the right to practice law in his state was passed near the close of the last session of the legislature: and so near did it come to being stowed away in the governor's capacious pockets, that his official signature Was not attached thereto until within two minutes of midnight of the last day of the ses- sion. Although many friends of the measure, in and out of the legisiature, labored earnest- ly tor the bill, its passage, and especially its nal approval by the governor, were no doubt largely’ due to the rsonal efforts of Mrs Clara 3. Foltz, a lady law student of this city, at that time well advanced in her readings, and who had determined upon the profession of the law as a means of honorable livelihood. ‘With the passage of the bill the laay entered upon her readings with renewed zeal. Few male students have been able to accomplish like proficiency in so short a period, when the fact is taken into consideration ‘that Mrs. Foltz has a family of five small children to care for, and for the most of the timehad done her housework unassisied, and occasionally has been obliged to take to the lecture fields as @ meapsj of piecing out hr mearre income.
