To-day the republicans will grapple with the Butler problem. Every one is curious to know how they will dispose of it. It has teen suggested that ahard-money dem- ocrat be nominated as lieutenant governor on the Talbot ticket. Unless some such fusion of the anti-Butlerites is brought about, the chances are that the “blue bloods” will be bluer still after election day: but a combina- tion of republicans and democrats in Massa- chusetts will be difficult to accomplish. The s*raight-out democrats expect to recover suf- «ciently from the perturbation caused by the «lisorderly proceedings of the Butler delegates to meet next week and consult in convention. The measures then taken, and the action of the republicans to-day, will have much intlu- ence in determining whether Gen. Butler's plan of traveling tothe Whi.e House by way of the Massachusetts governorship is to b2 successful. ————_-+e-—__ New Haven has been intensely excited over um election of three members of the city board ofeducation. The question at issue Was that of reading the Bible in the public Schools. The old board discontinued the eus- tom, though no complaint concerning these €xercises had been brought before them, and the only Roman Catholic on the board voted against the discontinuance. The party sus- taining the action of the board was composed Dl the New Havenites who wish to destroy every vestige of relation between church and State. The other side, advocating the reading Of the Bible in the schools, gained an over. Whelming victory, polling 4,351 votes to the 1,%3 cast by the opposition. The fight will be resumed next year, when three new members of the board are to be elected. Tke enforcement in Cincinnati of the law of the United States on the subject of the ap- C= NOVELTIES. BSELBY'S, nels Taio rear Penn's 18-tr Brenue, Ppointment of supervisors of congressional elec- tions is creating a stir among the politicians. This law provides that upon the petition of a Specified number of electors the circuit judge Shall appoint two supervisors, one from each of the leading parties, for every voting pre- einct, to supervise the casting and counting of ballots in election for members of Congress. Such petition has been made in Cincinnati, and the provisions of the law will be applied. The democrats resist the appointment of the Supervisors on the ground that the law, which bas never before been enforced though severa] years old, is unconstitutional. They regard the exercise of the proposed power by the United States court as, first, a federal inter- ference in the rights of a state and a usurpa- tion of the laws of Ohio; and, secondly, as the assuming by the judicial department of the separate and distinct duties that fall to the legislative department of the government. ———~<-e —__ It appears from the report of a journal of large circulation among architects and build- ers that the building of houses, and especially churches, has received all over the country a Wonderful impulse within a short period. This fact adds another straw to the collection pre- viously made of such indication of approich- ing good times. When churches of all kinds, rom the meeting-house to the cathedral, are in ceurse of construction in every section, the signs of the times are encouraging. —_—_<ee If Edison has announeed his new invention for the present week, we have not yet heard of it. Last week’s invention of the long-looked- for process by which the electric light can be Subdivided and made available for domestic use is of course antiquated by this time. Edi- SoD proposes to send power and heat into all the dwellings of a city by the same wire which brings to them the inexpensive electric light. This magic wire, which is to enter every house, can illuminate a room, heat it, rock the cradle or run the sewing machine, at the pleasure of the inmates. This is the thousandth marvel that Edison has performed, or has been on the eve of performing, or is said to have per- formed, or has promised to perform. Ellison is a great man 2nd a pi.celess boon to the newspapers. A phrenologist, wh:'s lecturing in New York recently, showed charts of tha heads of two prominent men, and deduced a description of their characters therefrom. Butler's hoviis brainy and cunning, characterizsd by self- esteem and acquisitiveness. Kearaey his only an inch and a quarterof moral brain, and conceit and tyranny predominate. Without fully endorsing these opinions of the phrenol- gist, we mention the matter as a suggastion of what phrenology may become as au element in politics. When all the world is led to be. Neve in the so-called science, charts, em:!- lished with representations of the heads of candidates, divided off {nto states and coun- ties, and appropriately labelled, will be indis- pensabie as campaign documents, to prove the fitness of applicants for the position squght. But it is feared that fraud would tainteven this method of determining the relative quali« fications of candidates.
