TERRIBLE ENCOUNTER WITH A DEADLY BLOW- ING VIPER IN A DARK ROoM. A terrible Scopes f befel Doctor Pauthamus and his lovely and accomplished daugiier Eleanor, Tuesday evening, in Williamsourg, Pa. It Seems that a couple of weeks ago two camps captured a pair of enormous repiiles, which the docior pronounced to be of that deadly species known as “blowing viper.” joctor, having a@ desire to contribute capone that would commend itself from this district, purchased the reptiles, intending to forward them to the Zoological Gardeas 10 Philadelphia. rey} a transportation the SS Placed in a large glass jar, tue being carefully secured by a covering of = re gauze. The jar was then placed ou au elevated bracket in a remote corner of t doctor's office. Last evening the doctor and iis daughter were returning from a visit to the ccuutry, aud the docior having occasion to make up a prescription they both enterea his oflice, the doctor lighting a lamp. Aut Dow c mes the terrible Lipeiinitiinges A large owl swept ip through th —- above the door, and flew with the speed of an arrow apainst the lamp. knocking it over and seat tering the oi! ard broken glass in every dire >- tion. The bird s‘emed trautic, flying ani dashing in every dive tion, while a geueral crash of bottles an SSeS was heard oo every side. Meanwhile the doctor had it another match, but just in time to pposise his daughter, who’ sprang with a wild to his arms; in the darkness he gathered | ‘is dar- ling w his arms, and in a momeut realized the situation. The owl had dislodged the jar from the bracket, and the vipers ye eat large. Speedily he groped his way, ing loudly for help, which, the hour belng late. was ‘slow to put in an appearance. They seemed slow, but cely five minutes elapsed until full a dozen ladies and brave men were onthe spot. No living hand can indite the horrors of the next few minutes. Miss Eleanor, who had been insensible since she sea to her father’s arms, was now being cared for by the ladies, when one simultaneous shriek almost froze the blood and paralyzed eid berve—yet not ali! It was Thomas Lutz’s hand that seized the glittering reptile by the neck and choked its fearful fangs apart. It bad bitten the lady midway be- tween the arkle and the knee, She was now carried immediately to her hi me, where every known antidote for po son was administered by her frantic father, but all to no avail. She died at half-past 6 o'clock this morning. After exer the poor unfortunate young lady home, one of the men, knowing there had been two shakes, returned to the office and soon dis- atebed the other. Au exaimination showed its two large fangs missing. This led to the conjecture that possibly the ‘Doctor had been bitten. A hasty return and close examina'ion resulted in finding the fangs in the Had leather of the Doctor's boot hi alarmed for his daughter, est oe of being struc he corpse of the young la wa has swollen to enormous di- ——. while her complexion is in harmony ith the ‘spots and genera! coloring of the snake The larger of the snakes measured four and a half feet, the smaller four feet. The neighborhood of Memphis, for miles around, is dotted with the camps of refugees who had no money to go further, and are fed by charity. United States army tents were ede as far as possible, but hundreds are jiving in rude ans and many have no shelter except open sheds. Camp Jo Williams, four and a half miles south of the city, is the larg- est of these settlements. Its inhabitants car- ried the scourge that they sought to flee from, and the physicians are trying in vain to Stamp it out. All cases are seni to an impro- poe —— Dr. Nall, the physician in attacked, and he had so ex- hansted himselt with work. that the disease went hard with him; but he tived through it, and is IS at his post. A Camp Jo Wil” liams resident, writing to a commercial firm in Louisville, says: ‘Women ae child — surrounded by little cor aes tered tents, see one by one od from their sight on to the hospital, thence to ih rave. Soon the babe is born, yellow as fol ; the mother lingers a few days, and thea ‘she, the last of the household, is put under ground. e@ save no women who are at- tacked.” In this camp, it seems, the fever is invariably fatal in its eitect on women, kiliiag them speedily and surely. Here is an illustra tion by the Same writer: A woman and her two daughters, aged 14 and 16, arrived from — his and applied to him for quarters. A GIRL AccuSsING HER OWN FATHER OF MURDEK.—The trial of Jesse. ines. the Wealthy farmer of Ballston Spa, N. Y , who is charged with murdering his ae navlacenee at her through an open window, =e wich she was sitting—is now progres: and is causing a great sensation. On Friday Jeunie Billings, a daughter of the deceased, 19 years old, was put on the witness stand as a witness against the father. She testified that he had abused her mother shamefully, who was con- nua afraid he would take her life; that he had wiipped her mother and twice a! ‘tempted to kill her, and that she (the daughter) accused him on the vight of the murder of committing it. She was greatly confused by the cross-ex amination, during which she wept copiously, and finally swooned away in the arms of the district attorney. She was conveyed into an adjoining apariment and seized with hyste- ria, during which blood flowed from her head, probably from over exciiement. A physician was summoned, and the young lady was placed in a carriage, to which she was carried seem- ingly insensible, by her relatives and conveyed to the hotel. O. St. Martin, district attorney pro tem., which resulted in Baptiste being stabbed and instantly killed by St. Martin. The latter was arrested and lodged in jail. During the night a mob of colored people, variously estimated at from one to two hun- dred, broke open the jail, took the prisoner therefrom an iiteratty’ riddled him with bul- leis beyond all recognition.
