A gentlemau here was kind enough to show me all his tax bills, and his case 1 am about to quote. He occupies in the heart of London, not very far from the Bank of England, a iarge building, recently erected in substantial style, which fronts about 38 feet on St. Bartholomew's close, and is about 40 feet indepth. In London the tenant and not the landlord pays the taxes’ but they are assessed, as with us, on the real ate. This building has a rental value of r $1,750, and if it could be bought at all— which st could not—he said he would be wiiling to give $15,000 or $50,000 for it. The rentals, ae said, Were usually estimated at from three to three and one-haif per centum of the freshold | © value of the property, the tenant, in add oa, paying the taxes. Were this property ia Pai! adeiphia, and valued, as most buildings now are, at an approximation to their value at a public sale, the tax on it would be #00) to #4) for municipal pur} oses. This gentleman paid for his entire municipal tax $125, of which about #9 was the poor rate, and the remaia der, of about #4, supplied every municipal charge, inciuding about everything for w n we pay taxes in Philadelphia. This sum was the ageregate of all his real estate taxes for every purpose. He paid, in the in. come tax due the general oton the profits of his business, that was the only other tax he paid.—(Currespondence Pi delphia Ledger.
