This morning. in the Circuit Court, Judge Humphreys, the case of Samuel Strong act the Distriet—action for amounts claimed to be due for work done on certain sewers—was re sumed. It had been rumored that on the meeting of the court to-day the counsel oa both sides would ask a continuance, and in the event of a refusal to grant the motio they would leave the court. On the court being opened, Judge Humphreys said that he inveuded to iry this ease, as it had been pend $5; ved. Hon. ing twe ‘Sor more. Mr. Cook remarked that that was not the question now. “Sufficient for the day is the evil thereof,” and they now were on the ques- tion of a postponement for a few days. The court remarked that this case havin, been begun in 1876, referred to an auditor, an been pending before him for two years or eighteen months, and he having finaliy made hisreport: and the ease paying come up on the 17th of July and been 3] sip set for Sep- tember 10th, a Jury having been detained over and making appearance, and two of them hav- ing been excused and the marshal having been directed to supply their places; and hav_ ing done so, and the case having been pending so long, he would go on with the case, or it should be disposed of regularly. The plaintiff could take a non-suit if he saw fit. Mr. Totten remarked that the plaintii! had said nothing about a non-suit. Mr. Cook again called attention to the re- quest for a postponement until Monday. he court said he would grant the 1 with the understanding that the ease ¢ or the plaintiff take a non-suit or d hdvaw, if so disposed. There was a fine display of flowers and fruits. Those particularly ad- mired were from Mrs. Nate, Mr. J.T. C. Clark, Mr.Thos. W. Fowler and Mr. John Saul. Mr. J. P. Hammond was elected a member of the society. On motion, Mr. B. D. Hyam was des- ignated by the chair to read an essay at the next meeting. Mr. Wm. Saunders delivered one of his Taprompts and interesting lectures which he termed “Seasonable Hints on the Culture of Plants and Flowers.” an import- ant point, he said, was to select good bulbs and then take care of them. Spring bulbs do not receive the attention eeceraly that they merit. Bulbs should be ¥ nted early in Oc- tober in sandy soil,as they succeed better than in clay, whien is general too dry or too wet. Hyacinths should be set two or three inches below the surface, and planted early, S$0.as to get well rooted. Hyacinths are best for. patie Plants. When placed in pots, the bulbs should be covered with ashes, which causes them to take root and have a healthy growth. The branch of his subject on cut- Ungs was very interesting. Three classes were considered—those young sueculent stems, of half ripened stems, and of woody stems. In the culture of cu‘tings, everythin; depended on the roots, which are nourishe by the foliage in the first and second class, the | and in the third class by the sap contained iu the stem; consequently the latter depends on the soil and heat which are active stimulating When the heat of the soil is above that of the atmosphere, is the best time for pianting them. e fall is the best season for setting trees and shrubbery for this reason. Twenty = ago he had arrived at the cou- ciusion that the growth of cuttings is due to the starch contained in the cellubose portion of the wood. This conclusion has been veri- fied five or six years ago by @ series of ex peri ments by some German sclentists.. Mr. Saun- ders was followed by interesting remarks ‘aylor, Mc. 3: and others. Atter a general iatormal discus sion of the subject, the society voted that all Who desired to attend the meeting ot the Maryland Norticultural Society at Baltimore next week should be z ith th re er credentiais. oer hoe wie tno veo A PLEASANT Rewepy.—Messrs.
