In response to frequent suggestions THE STA will cheerfully take charge of, and turn nto proper channels, any sums of money which may be sent to or left at its business office for ‘Le benefit of sufferers by yellow fever. To ensure a proper accountability in the dis- | “arge of this trust, the sums so furnished snould in all eases be accompanied by the ames of their contributors. —_—__~<+e —____ Appeals are made to THE Stan. almost daily and from nearly every conceivable source, to insert in its columns, free of charge, ad- | vertisements of entertainments, ete., look- ng to the raising of funds for the relief of ow fever sutlerers. and for other charita- le purposes of various kinds. To such calls we beg to makg general answer, one: that Tue : has already contributed or wi contribute, in money, such amounts as it feels able and ealled upon to give for that purpose, as well as toward any and all other charities | and objects having the right to appeal to the seneral publie for aid, and tha’ its inflexibie | rules require that all advertisements printed in tie paper must be paid for, no matter for whee benefit intended, or what end they may be caleulated to serve. - Laying aside all questions as to what these lemands would aggregate in the course of a | year, or whether or not they are always made in behaif of objects having the right, through general character and probabie usefulness, to ask for outside or publicaid, and layingaside, also, the further fact that contributions “in trade” are not usually regarded by their re- cipients as representing anything of material value, we submit to any reasonable person Whether compliance with such incessant and indiscriminate requests could in any line of business be regarded as a safe and proper proceeding. We are well satisfied that it is not. “No mixing of business and charity; tet each stand on its own footing. Give, as you can afford, to worthy and needy objects; require pay for what you do or have to sell.” These are the sound. simple and necessary business principles which govern this oflice. Others may do as they please; but it is our conviction that newspapers which adopt a code widely at variance with these rules will in a little while have neither intluence, money nor advertising to give in aid of any cause. oe —_____ In connection with the return of a portion of the party which recently went from this city to Memphis, as yellow fever physicians and nurses, two questions naturally arise in the mind of every one: If they were fully qualified for the duties they undertook to per- form, by acclimation, experience with the dis- ease, ete., why did they return? If they were not, why did they go? However good their intentions may have been, there is no disguis- ing the fact that they have been doing a very foolish and dangerous thing. Such blunders should be prevented in future. ee If the report be verified that the Porte will send an embassy to Afghanistan, we shall see Turkey mixed up in the battle of diplomacy between the English and Russian missions at Cabul. Whether Kogland or Russia gains the victory will be indicated by the decision of Shere Ali on the question of his heir-apparent. If be releases his son, whom he has impris- oned, and makes him heir-apparent, at the solicitation of the British embassy, Russian in- fluence at the capital of Afghanistan will be destroyed. If on the other hand Shere Ali refuses to reinstate his son and retains his adopted heir-apparent the victory will be with the Russians. It is of the highest importance to British interests in India that Afghanistan shall be under her control, or, at least, under the control of no other great power. The gravity of the situation is appreciated by the English, and every art of diplomacy will be employed to insure the success of the Cabul mission. —-<+e-—___ Wouldn't it be well to appoint some female colleetors of funds for the relief of yellow fever sufferers? Ladies have better success in that line than gentlemen, perhaps because it is harder to say “no” to them. ——— ee The fact that Maine has got off the well- beaten track, and gone wandering into the deserts of greenbackism, causes the discov- ered straying of the Gulf Stream some sixty miles further southward than set down in the charts, to become a deviation of minor im- portance. According to the Chicago Journal! of Com- merce alight has been generated from pure water and naptha, which is superior in many respects to the electric light, and can be used for heating purposes. There is consequently another addition to the list of applicants for recognition as the greatest wonder of the nineteenth century. Asif by way of compen- sation for prospective defeat as a lighting | agent, electricity is branching out as a horse- breaker. Electric wires run through the retns, and the current from the electric bat- tery acts upon the horse's mouth, subduing the most intractable animal. If the state- ment that a means of transmitting power by electricity has been invented, turns out to be true, the account will be more than balanced. And there isthe same ground for believing that such an invention has been made as that | a method of producing a superior light from water and naptha has been discovered. Both ure newspaper statements. It is beginning to look now as though the ‘ypographieal umions and trade societies of ne country had more political and business sfluence than the national democratic execu- ve committee at first gave them credit for. rhere are signs of taking water. “What the Republicans Should Do,” is the ie of an editorial article nearly a column in ‘ath in yesterday's Graphic. Prevent their tty from disintegrating, would seem to be ¢ Short way to state it. —<- -__ it Is expected that there will be considerable pposition to the scheme of introducing into ew York the Holly system for supplying ~cam to the inhabitants of the city for cook- , heating and other purposes. Fears that :8 valuable franchise requested will be .oused, the disturbance of the street pave- ments, causing interference with commercia transportation and public travel, and the fact that many of the streets are already taxed to their full capacity with gas and water mains and sewers, are the principal grounds for the opposition.
